Hello all When I was at Yorksgen in 2006, I was scheduled to go to the Northallerton Records Office. Unfortunately, that fell through - but now the need for information from there has grown more urgent, and I am hoping that someone will be kind enough to help me out. (It's a long walk from Michigan.) I need information on ownership of Moor House Farm in Bransdale, north of Kirkby Moorside. The farm (sometimes called "Moor Houses") was owned by my STONEHOUSE family back in the 1700s. Janice Wood ever-so-kindly took me to see the farm (thanks again, Janice!!!) and it was fascinating. The farm was owned by my 4x g-grandfather, Joseph STONEHOUSE. The house had a lintel over the door with: "J S 1802" written on it. The only problem with that is that my progenitor, Joseph STONEHOUSE, died in 1783. (His will mentions Moor House.) He had sons John, Joseph, and James - but James died in 1788. When I followed the christenings of John's and Joseph's (and the other children's) children, none were near Moor House, so I don't believe that any of the senior Joseph's children or grandchildren ever lived there after his death. So, then, who was the owner "J S" who built the house and put his initials over the front door? What years did the STONEHOUSE family own Moor House? It has become more urgent for me to know since a cousin is publishing another article on the STONEHOUSE family in Canada (which is where two brothers, Joseph, Jr and *my* Robert, immgrated in 1819 and 1830, respectively). He wants to include my gleanings from the Yorkshire years of this family - and I don't want to give him misinformation. Sorry for the long posting, but now you know why I would so much appreciate if someone visiting Northallerton would find information in the Deed Books (?) on Moor House Farm and, specifically, the years that the STONEHOUSE family (were there other family owners besides Joseph??) owned that farm. I will happily reimburse any costs incurred. Thank you! Nancy in cold, rainy, Michigan U S of A
