Hi, I am researching the Gillott family, I have come up against a brick wall, my grt grt grandfather was Joseph Gillott b abt 1830, on the 1861 census, it states that he was born in Thurlstone, Yorkshire, he was living in Derbyshire at the time of the census, along with his wife Sarah, & children, Jonas, Astley & Henry. Joseph & Sarah were married in Ashton under Lyne Lancashire/Cheshire Feb 1851, on their marriage Joseph's father, was listed as Jonas Gillott, Joseph & Sarah & family emmigrated to New Zealand in 1864/1865. I am unable to find Joseph & Sarah anywhere in the 1851 census. Also unable to find his parents, have found some Jonas's in Yorkshire, but don't know if any match, surely Joseph would have had siblings, very hard to find family especially when there was no mention or notation of family members that remained back in the UK I was wondering if there was anyone who could help me with my quest Cheers Carole New Zealand

Hi Carol, Don't want to lead you astray but the Gillott name is well known around the Sheffield area. In N. Derbyshire (Eyam) it is also spelt Yellot or something very close to that. Have you tried that area as well? Have you been through the Parish Registers for Thurlstone? Were your family non conformists as I note there is only a Baptist,Wesleyan, Congregational Church listed for Thurlstone. The C of E must have gone to the next village which is probably Penistone.
