Is it possible that "Marton Lordship" should probably read as "Marton Township"? I have just checked my Genealogical Gazetteer of England and it shows:- "Marton township parish Bridlington E.R. York Marton township parish Swine E.R.York Marton township parish Sinnington N.R.York." There is also "Marton in the Forest. N.R. York. 5-3/4 miles se Easingwold. Marton Le Moor chapelry parish Topcliffe N.R. York". Hi there, Excerpt from the Leeds Intelligencer Newspaper 1789 "This Farm is situate at Upper Thowthorpe, alias Thornthorpe, in Marton Lordship, about ten Miles from York, five from Easingwold, and held by a renewable Lease for Three Lives, under the Archbishop of York, at the annual reserved Rent of Ten Pounds, and pays a Composition of 6s. 8d. Yearly, in Lieu of all Tythes." This excerpt was from the following link; http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dutillieul/ZOtherPapers/NewLI10Mar1 789.html The following link also has some interesting reading on the area, including Marton Lordship, relating to boundary stones etc. http://apl385.com/gilling/history/chapt10.htm This next link shows Easingwold in the present day. As you can see, the only remaining 'part' of Marton is now Marton Abbey and Marton in the Forest. My guess would be that the area originally came under a Lord's jurisdiction, presumabley Lord Marton and he owned the surrounding land. Hope this helps http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=459640&Y=468800&arrow=Y& zoom=5 You can zoom in a little further on this map and there is a 'very small township' at Marton in the Forest including Marton Grange.
