    1. [YORKSHIRE] Christopher BRIGHAM families of early York, Durham, or Northumberland
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lharvie1 Surnames: Brigham Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14760/mb.ashx Message Board Post: WANTED: any information on Christopher BRIGHAM families of early York, Durham, or Northumberland Counties, England. We wonder if there is a Christopher BRIGHAM who had a son John Brigham born about 1680-1690. We have an end-of-line John Brigham (died 1734 in Holy Island, Northumberland, England leaving a widow and children by two marriages) who named his first known son Christopher Brigham born abt 1714). This John Brigham (d 1734 in Holy Island, will probated in Durham County) had ties to Weeton and Wellwick, Yorkshire, England- which may have been associated with his first wife, whose name is unknown. John Brigham´s children by his first marriage- Christopher (born abt 1714 per court records that indicate he was not 21 in June 1734 but was age 21 before he died in Oct 1735), and Mary, who married in 1737 in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England to George Lawson and who was deceased probably by 1739) inherited land in Weeton from their father - land that had belonged to Thomas Harland. Thus, it may have come through their mother, whose identity is still unknown to us. This is what we know: John Brigham in his will of 1734 leaves his freehold land in the county of York to his son Christopher Brigham on the latter becoming 21 years of age. From the Victoria History of the County of York, Vol 5, East Riding, p144: "An estate in Weeton, partly freehold and partly copyhold, descended in 1723 from Thomas Harland to John Brigham, whose daughter Mary married George Lawson. In 1743 the estate, including freehold of circa 70 acres, one bovate and two beast gates, was sold by Lawson to Henry Maister." Further court records indicate that Christopher Brigham had reached age 21 before his death in Oct 1735; and the land passed to his full sister, Mary Brigham who later married George Lawson. We are aware there are some Brigham families in Wellwick, but the records are VERY incomplete and inconclusive and we do not find a Christopher Brigham connection there. While CHRISTOPHER BRIGHAM is not a particularly common name in the Brigham families of the Yorkshire area, as far we can determine, there ARE other men by that name in Yorkshire. WE WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE OF THEIR FAMILIES along with any other men named Christopher Brigham. For example: i] IGI Extraction of parish registers Christopherus Brigham, married 10 Apr 1732 to Elizabeth Moake in Scrayingham, Yorkshire, England IGI Extraction Batch: M073902, years 1730-1812, source FHL film 0918409 IGI Patron submitted christening records: Christopher Brigham, chr 14 Mar 1696 in Wharram Percy, Yorkshire, England, son of Robert Brigham IGI Batch 8334991-72, source [would be a photocopy of submission document, which should include citation of the source used] FHL film1395683 Christopher Brigham, chr 19 Apr 1709, Wharram Percy, Yorkshire, England son of Robert Brigham [same batch as above, but sheet 65 - each submission form has 3 individual entries on it] Christopher Brigham, chr 20 Oct 1710, Wharram Percy, Yorkshire, England son of Christopher Brigham [same batch as above, sheet 65] I know little of these places - both Wharram Percy and Scrayingham are described as being in "Yorkshire East Riding" England - which is similar to the description for Wellwick and Weeton (although for Weeton there is one in Yorkshire East Riding and one in Yorkshire West Riding. (This might be a pro or a con on this discussion of possible parents for the end-of-line John Brigham.) For those who may understand such (of which I am not one): Holy Island, Northumberland, England has latitude of 55-39-44 N; and longitude of 001- 48 -33 W Welwick, Yorkshire East Riding, England has latitude 53-40-04 N; and longitude of 000-01-42 E Wharram Percy, Yorkshire East Riding, England has latitude: 54-03-53 N; longitude 000-42-03 W Scrayingham, Yorkshire East Riding latitude: 54-01-50 N; longitude: 000-53-07 W Weeton, Yorkshire East Riding latitude 53-39-31N; longitude: 000-02-35 E Weeton Yorkshire West Riding latitude: 53-54-33 N; longitude: 001-34-25 W [Taken from World Place Finder] ii] There are also a large number of Brigham´s in the area of Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorkshire, which also includes intermarriages with Watson families (the Holy Island Brigham families also intermarried with Watson). Like Wellwick, Holme on Spalding Moor has some incomplete early records, and there are so many John Brigham´s that it often makes it hard to determine who might be who. WANTED: Any information on families of Christopher BRIGHAM in early Yorkshire, Durham, or Northumberland Counties in England; or any additional information on the John Brigham who was married first about 1712/1713 (wife unknown-2 children Christopher and Mary Brigham), and married 2 on 12 Dec 1724 in Holy Island to Eleanor, widow of William Hope and daughter of Thomas ORD and had two children by this second marriage, Elizabeth and John Brigham both christened in Holy Island -in 1727 and 1729. We have much more information on this John Brigham whose will was probated in 1734 in Durham, but he was of Holy Island, Northumberland County, England. He was a mariner associated with the Port of Berwick as early as 1717/1721. Will be happy to exchange information Elizabeth L. Nichols for Richard A. M. Bickerton, descendant nicholsel@msn.com [I am a descendant of early Brigham´s in Holme-on-Spaulding Moor, Yorkshire] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
