I have not been able to go any further back from Alice, as there are no baptism records for Aysgarth prior to around 1700. However there were Dodsworths in the Thoralby area much earlier from other sources such as wills, tax records etc. It is just not possible to tie them all up into a family tree. I suspect that we are connected to the Dodsworths of Thornton Watlass but the link would probably be back in the 15th century. Again with Thomas BUTERFIELD it is not possible to know exactly who his father was but it was probably either a Richard or a Peter BUTTERFIELD. There is a will of John BUTTERFIELD of Thornton Watlass who died in 1664 who leaves money to his BUTTERFIELD relations at Thoralby, as well as establishing the BUTTERFIELD charity for the poor of Thoralby. I do not think it is possible to go much farther back with this tree either due to the poor baptism records at Aysgarth. There is one Peter Butterfield who was a real character and was either always getting into trouble , fighting or trying to con people out of property - see the National Archives records and search for Peter Butterfield! http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp?j=1 Another later Richard BUTTERFIELD must also have upset his neighbours as from the Quarter Sessions records held at Northallerton. 18 Feb 1774 John Hird of Wensley and James Watters of Harkerside bound for £20 ... to answer such matters as assaulting and beating Richard Butterfield of Wensley. This would be the Richard born Thoralby in 1730, who married Margaret Scott in Wensley in 1756 and who died in Wensley in 1818. I've no futher details. You can see my tree at Helen's pages on the site http://www.wtoram.co.uk/ Regards, Helen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
