Hello listers, I have been on the Lancashire list for a number of years but am curious to find out if there are Whiteside's in Yorkshire. It could be Whiteside, Whitside, Witsitt, etc.. Also, if there are families that do not have the Whiteside surname but might have cousins that are named Whiteside. Thank you for your co-operation. Wally Whiteside West Vancouver BC Canada

But why don't you do the obvious thing and look at the usual sources, like census returns, FreeBMD, etc. Entering simply "Whiteside" at FreeBMD, for instance, and the county as Yorkshire West Riding, North Riding or East Riding will produce a list of Whiteside BMDs. Another obvious resource is the 1881 census, which is free at various websites. I can tell you that from the Surname Atlas program (a brilliant little program on CD that produces instant distribution maps from the 1881 census data) that though Lancashire is by far and away the principal home of the surname, there were 45 entries in Yorks WR and 35 in Yorks ER and 10 in Yorks NR in 1881. The largest concentration were in Hull and Sculcoates, with 11 in Bradford. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
