Does anyone else have any ideas.> The place name seems to me to be BLACKER, which, according to the Genuki pages, is a hamlet in the chapelry of Worsborough and parish of Darfield, two miles south of Barnsley. It clearly starts with a "Bl" and ends in "ker" if you compare it with the word "Worker" on the same page. I cannot find any other place in the area that it might be. Noting that Thomas Hurst has a stepdaughter living with him, who was obviously a child of the wife's called Longbottom, I looked for a Mariana Longbottom at FreeBMD and there she is, birth registered at Barnsley in the Sep quarter of 1865, vol 9c page 166, which makes her the right age in 1901. The child was presumably born illegitimate to Mariana. You should hopefully be able to find her in the 1891 census and check what the birthplace was in that. Of course, you will have to look for her as Hurst or Winterbottom, since we don't know when she married Thomas - or, if indeed, she did, because I can't see a marriage at FreeBMD. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." There are too many bottoms in Yorkshire! -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Thanks Roy, That makes heaps more sense, mustn't have been think straight last night I did a search on names ending in *Ker and still didn't get it. I haven't really started looking at this particular HIRST line, I was doing a data clean up and thought this name doesn't look right !! Think I'll have a trawl through Ancestry and see if I can pick up a marriage for WINTERBOTTOM in Barnsley and go from there.
