Hello, Roy, I think your answer was a little harsh. Not everyone knows about the IGI. Nor how to use the Parish and Probate Records. viz. "surely you know what that is?" : a lot of people who are just starting out on their family history *don't know what that is*. Why not be kinder and say "Have you looked at: www.familysearch.org.uk/ and follow the links for 1. Search and 2. International Genealogical Index.?" Click on the above Links. I think it's just a matter of manners and a well brought-up person would say that. You see, Roy, there are basic amateurs, who are trying to make a start on their ancestors. (I was one once and I am sure you were one, too?) We all have to start 'somewhere' and if it happens to be on a list (where I once started and met nothing but 'friendly, helpful answers and willingly-given information' (vix. on the www.eng-lan-bolton.org.uk list, I would never have found my ancestors back to 1730. No offence intended. Just my thoughts when I read the message. Please remember to be humble and not arrogant and that everyone has to begin somewhere. Plus ask somewhere!!How on earth can they begin if they don't ask questions? I'm sure you did once upon a time and I did too. All the best, Carolyn.
