If there's no OPC project for Yorkshire, how about co-ordinating it yourself? There isn't just one OPC for a county but a project that involves a whole team of volunteers who are willing to take the time to transcribe the parish registers, census returns and other records from the parish chest, double check the transcription for accuracy before making it available. Each volunteer is the OPC for whatever parish or parishes s/he choses. The choice is usually governed by a person's interest in a particular parish. Some of the results are put online, some are not. Some enquiries are dealt with by email, some by snail mail, some by phone. Kent, Cornwall and Somerset all have OPC projects. I believe Devon has a similar project. It isn't a quick, simple enterprise. It's very time consuming and requires organisation.
Hi, Lancashire also have an OPC group, which is growing daily. Loads of parishes transcribed and I'm in the process of transcribing Turton. As well, they are all so friendly and helpful that it's a delight to belong to this group. Carolyn.
