Have you had a look at the US censuses? Not always very helpful since they give only the country (sometimes county) for non American born residents but often they give the length of time a couple has been married. You can also get hold of copies of marriage and birth certificates, if it isn't too early, which you'll find as informative as Australian ones. Try www.usgenweb.com/ and http://feefhs.org/FDB2/SFCALLI.HTML (covers the period 1869-1895). Then there's the California State Vital Records site: www.vitalsearch-ca.com/ For what else is available: www.researchguides.net/census/free.htm If all else fails try subbing to alt.genealogy. It's a gatewayed newsgroup, but don't worry, it isn't a bear pit! <http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Newsgroup_Gateways/ALT-GENEALOGY.html> They're very friendly and very helpful.

    3. My ancestors were not in America long enough to make it to a census. I cannot obtain a marriage or birth certificate as it was before official records (I have tried), Thank you for the California link I will give them a go but the California BDM was not able to assist.
