    1. Re: [YORKSHIRE] new to list - selby/hull area
    2. Hello Tamara You are bound to have a long and interesting search with a JOHN SMITH! LINCOLNSHIRE has 5 different Burtons:- BURTON (nr Lincoln) BURTON WATERS (nr Lincoln on the R. Fosse) BURTON COGGLES BURTON PEDWARDINE BURTON UPON STATHER. The last one is on the R Trent and navigable to both the Humber & North Sea. I know it was a ship building place as one of my family sailed from there in 19th Century. It is possible that John Smith had something to do with this area. I looked for marriages in Lincolnshire & over the border in Yorkshire, no joy. I found two John Smith marriages to a Harriet (note spellings) in Kent-both in coastal places which might offer you a lead:- J Smith to HARRIOT DEVERSON 1828-Sandwich, Kent J Smith to HARRIOTT LANGLEY 1827-Strood nr Rochester, Kent Good luck with your searching Jenny from Hull. I would love it if this were my couple but I'm certain that the christenings in Castleford can't belong to my family. This is what I know of the family so far: JOHN SMITH b ?Burton Lincs (1861 census) Naval Captain/Mariner/Inn Keeper (census records/daughters wedding certificate) HARRIET?? b Canterbury Kent (1851 census) children: 1. Mary Jane 1830 Selby Yorkshire (IGI) 2. Harriet Ann 1831 Selby Yorkshire (1851 census) 3. Henry Harrison 1833 Kingston Upon Hull Yorkshire (1861 census) 4. Eliza 1835 Kingston Upon Hull (IGI) 5. Eliza 1836 Kingston Upon Hull (IGI) 6. EMMA JULIA SMITH 1839 Great Yarmouth Norfolk (my ancestor) The couple in Castleford had children in 1829, 1831, 1834, 1836, 1839 and 1845 so sadly I don't think it can be the same couple. John and Harriet must have married sometime between 1825-1830 though it was probably between 1828-1830, as Harriet was recorded as being about 30 years old in 1841. John was a mariner so he probably married Harriet when he was a bit older than usual (he was about 25 years older than her!), or perhaps Harriet was a second wife. It's going to be a frustrating and difficult search to look for their marriage I think! I think it must have been in Yorkshire, it would have been a long distance for John to travel, he was probably up north and near the coast at the time if he was in the Navy or a Seaman and met Harriet when he was on land for a time....I don't know, it's a mystery, Thanks again, Tamara. > york_lanc_FH <york_lanc_FH@blueyonder.co.uk> wrote: > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > - > > > JOHN SMITH Pedigree > Male Family > > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > Event(s): > Birth: > Christening: > Death: > Burial: > > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > Marriages: > Spouse: HARRIET TOWNEND Family > Marriage: 04 NOV 1828 Castleford, Yorkshire, England > > > > > Your route details - View summary results | Plan a new route > > From: Selby,North Yorkshire > > To: Castleford,West Yorkshire Reverse this route > > Distance: 15.4 miles Show in kilometres > > Time: 0 hr 28 min > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <tamweller@optusnet.com.au> > To: <ENG-YORKSHIRE@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2007 5:34 AM > Subject: [YORKSHIRE] new to list - selby/hull > > > > > > Hello everyone :) > > I recently discovered that I have a link to Yorkshire in my family > tree. > > I'm really struggling however to know what to do from here. > > My ancestor was a JOHN SMITH who was actually born in Lincolnshire, I > > haven't found his birth/baptism but I believe it may have been > 'Burton' > > (that's what it seems to read in the 1861 census) circa 1787.
