HI all, I've just received a will from 1768, out of the 450 words there is approx 35 words that I can't decipher, can anyone assist please. Of the ones I can read I'll put in context, I've tried various website to no avail. These may be fairly simple for most as this is the first time I've looked at a will that old. "perfect mind and memory, thanks to the all mighty God and "Cullin___ or Cussin___" mind the uncertainty of life" "of all my sins and my body to be buried in such place and manner as to my "leorutive" (I think)" " after to return to Mary my daughter being "Baroted or Varated" by other mannor or form above mentioned which house" "passed Seal 12 February 1771" I think it's passed what does this mean ? the Will was written in 1768, does that mean it passed probate in 1771 ? Thomas COCK left his house chattels etc.. to his daughter and one shilling each to his two sons, I'm no expert but wasn't this unusual for the time. If any one could assist or point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful. Cheers Carolyn I'm not stuck, I'm ancestrally challenged! http://www.eburacum.com/
Hi Carolyn Always good fun trying to work out old wills isn't it As the majority of wills follow a basic pattern I would suggest reading a few old wills of the same period There are many here for various Counties that have been transcribed http://www.willtranscriptions.co.uk/index.htm (once you have done yours you might like to donate your transcript) Once you have cracked one, you will find others much easier to follow As regards the leaving of one shilling, that is very common Two reasons for this, one to make sure the other sons could not contest the will saying they had been left out of his will by accident (in other words the deceased did not want the sons to inherit) Or the deceased had already given something to the sons before he died and wanted to make sure the remainder was for the daughter and not also claimed by the sons Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > HI all, > > I've just received a will from 1768, out of the 450 words there is approx > 35 > words that I can't decipher, can anyone assist please.
