    1. [YORKSHIRE] Rachael BROWN of Horncastle, 1800-1880's
    2. Jenny Goldsworthy
    3. Who is Rachael BROWN and what became of her!   Rachael BROWN had 3 children chr. at Horncastle, no father for the children was listed and she was listed as a domestic servant. Charles Thomas BROWN chr.2Oct. 1831, William Henry BROWN chr.20 June 1833, Jane BROWN chr.26 Oct. 1834.   I know Charles Thomas BROWN marr.1855 Hull to Mary Elizabeth JACKSON and  by 1881 cenus was living in Sheffield listed as Thomas BROWN. They were my g.g.grandparents. On his marriage certificate he gave his fathers name as Thomas BROWN, a joiner.   Can't seem to find a relevant marriage for Rachael BROWN so she may have been unmarried, and doesn't seem to be on Cenus returns for 1841 or 1851 nor her children.   She may be Rachael BROWN b 1810 daughter of John BROWN & Elizabeth BELLAMY. She may be Rachael BROWN mar.2 Dec. 1845 Holy Trinity Church, Kingston upon Hull to Thomas Simpson LONGMORE. or even Rachael BROWN d. 1845 Gainsborough.   I hope someone can help with information about her, her birth family and her 2 children William Henry BROWN & Jane BROWN and what became of them.   As I live in New Zealand searching Hull and Lincolnshire is difficult as everything seems to be listed as , "you can go in and search"   Thanking you in advance, Jenny

Firstly, if you go to Findmypast and do a search in their Parish Records - Baptisms you will find a record of a child in 1831, shown only as "male", at Horncastle. The document type says this is not actually a baptism but a maintenance order and the mother is given as RACHEL BROWN. The father is shown as THOMAS YOUNG of Louth, coal merchant. It seems highly likely to me that this child was your Charles Thomas Brown, your gt-gt-grandfather. The source of the record is given as Lincolnshire Parish Bastardy Records. If he gave his father's name as Thomas Brown when he married, this was probably to cover his embarrassment and not wanting to admit he was illegitimate - a very common thing. Secondly, the Rachel Brown buried at Gainsborough in 1845 cannot be your Rachel because this burial appears at FMP in the National Burial Index for Lincolnshire and the record says the age at death was "infant". Third, FMP parish records has the burial at St Mary, Horncastle on 27 June 1833 of a Wm Henry Brown, infant. So that explains what happened to at least one of Charles's siblings - he died a week after being baptised. Finally, the 1841 census has several Thomas Youngs at Louth. Unfortunately, relationships and marital status are not shown in 1841, but my guess would be that Rachel had a long-standing relationship with someone who was not free to marry her, probably because he was already married. Of course, it is not certain by any means that Thomas Young was the father of all her children, since I have found a bastardy maintenance order for only one, the first child Charles Thomas. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Of course, it is not certain by any means that > Thomas Young was the father of all her children, since I > have found a bastardy maintenance order for only one, the > first child Charles Thomas.> I have further information for you, all found relatively easily online. On the assumption that your Rachael Brown was probably the one baptised at Horncastle in 1810, I looked for any female called Rachael or Rachel (entering no surname at all) born at Horncastle in the censuses. This produced entries in 1861, 1871 and 1881. In 1861 there is only one Rachael born at Horncastle circa 1811 and this is a Rachael CRANE, widow, at Hull with a 16-year-old son William. I then went to FreeBMD and found the following potential marriage..... Marriages Sep 1853 Brown Rachel Hull 9d 306 CRANE William Hull 9d 306 If the marriage was not until 1853 and William was born in 1845, then I thought he was probably Rachael's stepson. Sure enough, he is found in the 1851 census at Hull, the son of William and Hannah Crane. His mother must have died and William remarried to Rachael. In fact, this is confirmed in the 1871 census when William Crane appears, still at Hull, as Rachael's son-in-law (meaning stepson, NOT son-in- law as we understand the term today). The head of the household in 1871 is an unmarried woman of 32 called Arrabella BROWN and Rachael is shown as her mother, so Rachael must have had a fourth child in or about 1838/9! Arrabella was born in Hull, so Rachael must have moved there prior to the 1841 census. You will find the IGI has the baptism at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, on 24 Oct 1838 of a female child called ARABELLA CAROLINE BROWN BROWN. Was the double-Brown a transcription error or was the father of this child coincidentally called Brown also? The mother is shown as RACHEL BROWN. It looks as if your gt-gt-gt- grandmother put herself around a bit, I'm afraid to say! In 1881 Rachel [sic} is found, now aged 70, still called CRANE, at 3 Hessle Rd Buildings, Hull, sharing the house with another elderly woman called Eliza Cockerill. Rachel's occupation is given as "Annuitant", so she must have had a bit of money from somewhere. Finally, FreeBMD has the death at Hull in the March quarter of 1889 of RACHEL CRANE, aged 78, vol 9d page 155. I think I can now say I think it is very likely I have solved for you the mystery of who Rachael/Rachel was and what happened to her. In summary, she was born circa 1810 at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Brown; she had 3 illegitimate children at Horncastle, of which at least one died; she had a 4th illegitimate child at Hull; married at Hull in 1853 to William Crane, was widowed in the 1850s and died herself at Hull in 1889. Will that do? Of course, if I've followed the wrong Rachael Brown, then disregard this entirely !!! <vbg> -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
