Ian In order to maintain continuity on this subject I have collated the emails that we have exchanged on this subject. To Ian - reply sent 05/11/09 Unfortunately I currently do not have access to the 1911 Census, but I believe that your TOPLIFT should read TOPCLIFFE, which is adjacent to the other areas mentioned on previous Census returns. To assist in understanding the area names mentioned on the various Census returns I have created a map (unfortunately modern day) but it shows the relationship of East Ardsley; West Ardsley; Tingley & Topcliffe. As all the Census returns are not local to the above areas the enumerators would not have known the area, therefore would have had to rely on either verbal, or written notes on the family. I see that Lily's father originated from Devon and I think that his broad devonian acsent could have easily been misunderstood by a Durham enumerator. The attached was created by extracting section of the Ordnance Survey from the following web-site. http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm >From Ian 05/11/09 Hi Raymond The person I am seeking is Lily Palmer. She was the 5th of 11 children and the only one born in Yorkshire - all the rest were born at Castle Eden, Durham. Why Lily was not also born there is a mystery so far - perhaps her mother had a relative there or was there for some other reason at the time of birth. I did find a mention of Toplift on another person's tree after doing a Google search but there was no additional information available. A reply to a posting I put on the Yorkshire List suggested that there was a Toplift at Outwood which is sort of in the right area. Another possibility might be Topcliffe but it seems to be too far north to be a contender. The difficulty is that the place of birth for the person I am trying to trace is different on all 4 census records - Ingley (which I cannot find) in 1881, West Ardsley in 1891 (I cannot find it either but assume it is not too far from East Ardsley which appears on my atlas), Tonslift or Tunslift or similar in 1901 (hard to decipher) and Toplift in 1911. Lily and her family were living at Seaham Harbour, Durham in 1911 and her husband was a coal miner. I am fairly sure that she was the Lily Palmer who was born at Wakefield in 1878 which fits with West Ardsley and perhaps Toplift if it is near Outwood. The spelling of many places in the census records is often not accurate which makes things difficult.
