Hi Nancy Although the following hints otherwise, in my experience Treacle is the dark black stuff and Syrup is the lighter coloured stuff (as in Golden Syrup) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treacle I have never heard dark Treacle called Syrup in this Country Treacle was used for cooking and syrup was a tad more refined and used to pour over puds such as pancakes on shrove Tuesday(with the exception of steamed pudding which was made with golden syrup) I am now thoroughly hungry having thought of my mothers steam puds Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I can remember my Gran talking about treacle, but I honestly don't know >what that is.
