    3. Hi again Dennis *They* (board posters) do not in the main subscribe to the lists, some people prefer boards to the lists As they do not in many cases know the lists exist why would you expect them to periodically check the archives ? There is nothing on a board post to tell the poster it will be gatewayed to the list and neither does there need to be The system is simple, if its a gatewayed post (which is clearly signaled as such) the list poster should click the blue link and reply there Gatewayed posts are an additional facility to help both board and list users The system works just fine if you follow the instructions Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > They can periodically check the list archives for replies. They can still access the archives. >As they do not in many cases know the lists exist why would you expect them >to periodically check the archives ? For the very reason you mention. Not all listers (like myself) will bother to post replies to the board. If the OP wishes to see *all* replies, the would be well advised to look in the archives. >There is nothing on a board post to tell the poster it will be gatewayed to >the list and neither does there need to be At the bottom of http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/mb.ashx it says... "Posts to this board are copied to the "ENG-YORKSHIRE-L" RootsWeb.com mailing list." ... in very small print. I think ancestry/rootsweb should do something to make board posters *more* aware of this. Maybe, for gatewayed boards, a pop-up the user needs to confirm before the post goes thru. Or better yet, a method to send gatewayed replies back to the board. >The system is simple, if its a gatewayed post (which is clearly signaled as >such) the list poster should click the blue link and reply there Since not everyone will follow the "system", I would recommend that the person asking for information/help take it upon themselves to look for replies wherever they might appear. *** Since this is not really Yorkshire related, I will now bow out of this discussion. -- Dennis Kowallek Cincinnati, Ohio [email protected] ******************
