    1. [YORKSHIRE] Keighley men who fought at Flodden Field
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. I have just replied to a message on the WEST RIDING list in which I discussed my SHACKLETON ancestors from Keighley and Kirkby Malham and I mentioned that a Richard SHACKYLTON had fought under the command of Lord Clifford, the famous "Shepherd Lord" of Skipton Castle, at the Battle of Flodden Field, Northumberland, in 1513 when an English army beat the invading Scots on behalf of Henry VIII. Clifford took a contingent of men from the Craven area to fight under the overall command of the Earl of Surrey I have in my files a pdf of a book in which is listed all the names of the men of Keighley who went to Flodden to take part in the battle and I thought it might be useful if I posted it here since, who knows, there may be other listers who had an ancestor at this famous conflict. The book was published in the 19th century under the somewhat lengthy and cumbersome title of KEIGHLEY PAST AND PRESENT; or, AN HISTORICAL, TOPOGRAPHICAL, AND STATISTICAL SKETCH of the TOWN, PARISH, AND ENVIRONS of KEIGHLEY, INCLUDING Riddlesden, Marley, Hainworth, and some other places in the contiguous PARISH OF BINGLEY: LIKEWISE AN ACCOUNT OF THE ANCIENT FAMILIES WHICH HAVE FLOURISHED THEREIN, WITH A BRIEF MEMOIR OF THE REV. THEODORE DURY, M.A., LATE RECTOR OF KEIGHLEY. For those with Keighley interestes, the entire book can be found and downloaded from..... http://www.yorkgen.com/Downloads/Keighley%20Past%20and%20Present%20V1- 03.pdf Here is the relevant section, with the list of names of more than 40 men of Keighley who were at Flodden Field..... " A list of individuals from the different townships in Craven, who in 1513, followed the Lord Clifford, and fought under the standard of the Earl of Surrey at the battle of Flodden Field, was, a few years ago, transcribed by the Rev. Wm. Carr, of Bolton, probably from the ancient muster-roll, preserved in the archives of the descendants of the Cliffords. This list was presented to John Nicholson, and added to the poem of "Airedale." The following being the names of the individuals from the parish of Keighley, who shared in the honours of that decisive victory : John Rawson, bow, horse and harness. 3. Dear Roy, We've often corresponded in the past, and I thank you for all you have done to help so many researchers. About the SHACKELTON family, I think othat one of the Shackletons was an adventurer and explorer in the 1800s. As I recall, he was related to my SPENCER family, which was from Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. Do you have any record of him? Also I'd like to say that my professional name is Mary Jane Phillips-Matz, and I am a musicologist. All good wishes, Mary Jane ) . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roy Stockdill" <roy.stockdill@btinternet.com> To: <YORKSGEN@rootsweb.com> Cc: <ENG-YORKSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 19, 2010 9:51 AM Subject: [YORKSHIRE] Keighley men who fought at Flodden Field >I have just replied to a message on the WEST RIDING list in which I >discussed my > SHACKLETON ancestors from Keighley and Kirkby Malham and I mentioned that > a > Richard SHACKYLTON had fought under the command of Lord Clifford, the > famous > "Shepherd Lord" of Skipton Castle, at the Battle of Flodden Field, > Northumberland, in > 1513 when an English army beat the invading Scots on behalf of Henry > VIII.
