It appears that Eastby is near Skipton, not Easby. Can you clarify for me. Thanks, Natalie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The 1908 transcription of the Barwick in Elmet register definitely says Eastby but it probably was a transcription error. I was not aware of Stokesley at all. Local knowledge is great! I will chase up William through the Doncaster archives. Thanks again Natalie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is a parish in N Riding near Skipton, formerly known as Stokesley. I've looked in the Stokesley records and I think I've found the Mason line. WILLIAM MASON, bap 13/09/1702 married Mary ?, she was buried 31/05/1742 his father was: WILLIAM MASON JNR, bap 22/11/1668, occupation Wright, he also had another child, John, bap 20/10/1706, bur 27/01/1720 his father was: WILLIAM MASON SNR, who married Catherine Smayls 26/11/1667, she died 06/09/1670, William was her only child as far as I can tell from the records. William Snr then remarried Elizabeth Richeson on 18/07/1671 and had a number of other children; ?Mary (bur 15/07/1677), Robert (bap & bur 11/02/1680), Alces (*Alice? bap 20/10/1672), Ellinor (bap 03/09/1682), Ellener (bap 05/04/1675), Mary (bap 22/03/1684), John (bap 10/11/1678, bur 06/07/1682) & John (bap 15/12/1689). William Snr was buried 05/10/1722. his father was: WILLIAM MASON THE ELDER, bur 16/09/1678, who also had anther son, Marmaduke(!) Unfortunately the records end at 1750, with no further record of the Masons of this line, indicating that they moved from the area, but there seems a possibility that William & Mary are the grandparents of your Ann Mason. At the very least it gives you something to work with and eliminate, which is sometimes easier than searching blindly. Hope it helps, Kate Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was the son of Robert Gilpin who was born in Whitehaven, son of Henry Gilpin. I have Sarah marrying Robert Holmes and in 1901 I have her living in Charles Street, Colne. Whether you are still looking at family connections or not, I don't know, but I am more or less certain tht we have one. My Grandmother was Mary Margaret Gilpin who was orphaned aged 5 and brought up by her mother's sister. The family moved to Kendal, where she died in 1932, unfortunately without my ever knowing her. I hope you are still out there, I would love to compare notes. Cheers. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I cannot find a son William for this couple. Why I am looking at Doncaster is that on the registers for the birth of William's children in Barwick in Elmet, it says ....son or daughter of William Carr, Kiddal Lane End, Innkeeper, descended from John and Elizabeth Carr, Doncaster and Alice, descended from William and Ann Mason, Eastby. Now I am not sure if this means that they were living in Doncaster at the time of the baptism of their grandchild or that they originated in Doncaster, same for the Masons. The other problem is is that the only marriage I can find of a William Carr and Alice Mason took place in London on 27 March 1769 in St Marylebone. The possibility is that as William's occupation was innkeeper, then maybe his father was also, and maybe they moved about a bit - but this is pure speculation. If you have the Eastby records, maybe if you have time, you could check the Mason's marriage and Alice's birth. Appreciate your help and interest. Then you can type them out onto here. Also, as warncoot suggested, look up the birth in FreeBMD and then (using the instructions on FreeBMD) send off for a copy of the birth certificate. That will tell you the parents and date and place of birth. Bryan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Would you be able to check for the marriage of a John Carr to Elizabeth? in about 1730, and if you have the christening records, could you please check for the christening of a William Carr in about 1732. IGI does not go far enough back unfortunately. Your kindness in doing all this work is very appreciated.
