Dear listers, I am sorry to say that I have had a couple of computer crashes, fortunately correctable, but in the meantime I cannot complete the latest updating of the YKS Surnames List database. I have taken note of the requests for adding surnames, correcting entries and emails and I have made the necessary changes to the database. The only thing left for me to do is to upload the revised database to the net, which I will do as soon as I have my desktop computer back and everything is working again properly. In the meantime, you can still consult the YKS database without problem, please keep your requests coming and do bear with me! Hello all Is anyone out there researching the NEWSOME and/or BEALE families? I am trying to work back from a William Newsome Beale HALL, born 1839 in London, son of Thomas Thomson Hall and Catherine (nee Mills). Listed in the 1841,51,61,71 & 81 census is William Newsome Beale, farmer/landowner at Doncaster - though he was born 1808 at Misson, Notts. I would particularly like to find out when and how the Newsomes and Beales became connected - perhaps through marriage in the 1700's - and if and how they are linked to my W N B Hall. I have been looking into this without success for about 2 years, so any scrap of info would be appreciated. Thank you and best wishes Mary

Illegitimate children were liable to become a burden on the local parishoners so the Church Wardens etc would try to identify the Father and either get him to make a one off payment or something like 6d a week until the child was of working age (like 14). You will need to go to the local Record Centre to look up the relevant records; which will probably be on microfilm. More chance for the earlier dates than later in the 1800s. If you don't find a name on the baptism, it could be worth looking at church meetings, this was were I found my missing father. Also court records can some times throw up something. Certainly some of the earlier records from the 1800s have indications of who the father was so if you can find a baptism go and look at the original record. The reason is that sometimes the father's name is there and crossed out. My guess is so that if asked for a copy the parson would not include the detail but it would be there to remind him. You don't say what date you're looking at so the above may not help but it's probably worth a try. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
