Author: rshaw20 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/15659.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Bryan Thanks for the assistance. Thomas Craven Lister has been counted out of possibilities as he was married to another lady and had several children by her, his records in the census also show a different occupation. The other Thomas is a possiblity. There is a 1871 census entry for a Thomas G Lister b.abt 1855 leeds (the g is not that clear on the original record though), whose father was John Lister (transcribed as Nister) a bricklayer (RG10; Piece: 4536; Folio: 32; Page: 25). However there is also a Thomas G Lister (b. abt 1854) on the 1881 census married to Elizabeth, he is recorded as been born in Shipley YKS and there is a birth registration for Thomas Glover Lister in Shipley in 1854, so this is unlikely to be my ancestor either. The mystery remains! I have found Thomas, Gertrude and the 2 children on the 1891 census in Leeds. However I have not found either Thomas or Gertude on the 1881, even under alternative spellings of the surname, which is puzzling. I am not putting too much emphasis on his fathers name on the marriage certificate as in some cases this was falsified to cover illegitmacy (my grandfather did this on his marriage certificate in 1939 to cover his illegitimacy, his mother never married!). I have also found that on my G Grandmothers (Ethel) birth certificate (1887) Thomas was still a jewellers assistant and was living at 13 Kendall Terrace, Leeds, also the birthplace of Ethel. Katie, What details of your family. My husband's great grandfather married a Welsh girl, they moved from Holmfirth, Huddersfield to Wales and back to Huddersfield from the various census data. I noticed quite a lot of people originated in Wales whilst I was researching this line in Huddersfield. Jean in S. I have told all of my daughters the news and they are excited as well. I am presently gathering all the old pictures and making notes on family members that date from the 1800s, i.e., husbands, wives, children, etc. so I can send on the information to you. The pictures you sent, I do recognize several people, one in particular, Beth's grandmother. I will send my information over the next several days. I have some wonderful pictures of the family and I will clearly identify who they are for you. I certainly will be in touch on a regular basis. So happy to have found you. Beth and I have been trying to track you down for months. I replied to you directly using the email address you posted. I hope I didn't overwhelm you with information. I have some photos that Mgr Murphy took when he lived in the US. I believe quite a few of them are of Creavens. I sent some to you. I'll send the rest soon. I'd love to see the photo you have from the 1880s or any other old photos you may have. Photos were mostly taken in studios in Ireland (by the general public) until the middle of the 1900s probably due to poverty. The few cameras that existed here were owned by the rich (who were scarce) and the Irish who emigrated (when they returned home to visit), like Mgr Murphy. As a result, most old photos I've found are studio ones or those taken by Fr. Martin (the name we used for Mgr. Murphy). I hope we stay in touch. I certainly intend to keep in contact. I'd love to meet you if you visit Ireland. Regards, Tim Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi all, just joined the list a few days back, so thought I would introduce myself. I'm Katie, aged 31, and I live in NE Wales. I have always known of my Yorkshire ancestry, as my father's line goes back to the 1820s in Hoyland; but I was also shocked to discover that my mother's paternal line traces back to North Yorkshire in the 1830s! I have been interested in researching my family tree ever since my teens, but have only been researching seriously for the last 2 years. Although I have never lived in Yorkshire, I consider it my spiritual home. Hope this list will be of help to me, and that I in turn will be able to help others. Katie

So much so that I wonder if in 1861 & 71 he may have been under a different surname. There are two possible registrations for his birth which I can see: Births Jun 1855 Lister Thomas Craven Leeds 9b 394 Births Dec 1855 Lister Thomas Leeds 9b 347 If you can show that either of these has no father then you could hypothesise that his mother was married after Thomas' (Tom's) birth and then look for him under the name of his step dad. This does not explain why he is not found in 1881 and 1891. It's not like he was a sailor or soldier who might be abroad but I suppose even a Jeweler migh be off on some business at, for example, an exhibition in Paris or buying Jet in Spain. I am new to searching and not totally computer literate. I am now on Ancestry.com. My daughters gave it to me for my 66th birthday this past May. My great grandfather was John Creaven and the date of death you provided (1930)is about right. He had 4 children, John(Johnny who died at age 11 between 1870s/1880s, William(Uncle Bill), Thomas(Uncle Tom), and Mary Cecelia who was my grandmother born about 1894-96 and died 2-21-69. My great grandfather married a Mary Foy from Philadelphia who died giving birth to my grandmother. My great grandfather did have a brother (either Timothy or Patrick) not sure of the correct name, that arrived about 1859 and settled in Washington, DC and I believe my great grandfather arrived about 1861. They both lived in Foggy Bottom (lower Georgetown) and my great grandfather opened a saloon called Creavens at 26th & K Street, the family home was next door. I ! have a picture taken in the 1880s of him, several of my Uncles in front of the saloon and my great grandmother standing in the doorway. As a child, my grandmother would have visits from her cousins, Monsignor Martin Murphy, Bridget Creaven, and Annie Cannon. Msg. Murphy retired back to Ireland, and the last letter I received from him was in 1966; at the time his address was Kilbeg, Headford, Co. Galway. Bridget stayed here in the US and Annie Cannon (not sure if she was a cousin or not) went back to Ireland with Msg. Murphy. I have been trying to find extended family off and on since 2006. I did get in touch with Beth Creaven, whose grandfather Leo Creaven was my grandmother's cousin as well. I had not seen Beth or her sister since we were children. That part of the family lived in Virginia and have not stayed in touch, but Leo and his wife lived several blocks from us. As a child, I would sit with my grandmother and her cousins during their visits and they would speak Gael! ic. I remember this so clearly and once a year Msg Murphy would come a nd bless the house. My grandmother married a Ruppert McNeill who came from Scotland, who died in 1933. My Mother Elizabeth died in 1977 and my Uncle John (Jack) McNeill is still alive at age 88. I married into the Sheridan family from Northern Kentucky and have 24 sisters & brothers in law as well as close to 80 nieces and nephews. My husband was one of 14 children. Anyway, I am so glad to have found a relative, I do hope we can keep in touch. I have not been to Ireland, but cannot wait to go for a visit with my daughters. I am on Facebook.com under Marcia Sheridan and my E-mail address is Lacelady00@gmail.com. Home phone is 301-933-5045 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
