Do you have the marriage cert which should tell you his father name and occupation. The birth will hopefully give you an address to check in 1881. Unfortunately there is sometimes no other way but to pay for a certificate or two. It makes sense, sort of, when you see that his name in the marriage index entry is Ivyno Hallam - perhaps Ivy was a nickname?? I can't find Ivanhoe any earlier than that.
