Agreed. It may be out of date for some, but today's expanded lexicon is nothing to write home about. I had now idea that those locations were so close to each other. I've since ordered a CD with old maps of Yorkshire. Some of them show what I would imagine to be wagon trails and hiking paths. It's very interesting when I use "Google Earth" to look up some of the locations and see what they look like today and try to imagine what the living conditions were like back then. A phone call will probably provide the answer as to whether or not a particular office has a copy and an invitation to spend your money. Don't forget though that wills sometimes take years to go through probate in exceptional circumstances although it's probably usually within the year. Hi Mel, thanks for the reply. I found the birth index on FreeBMD yes. Actually the Robert from 1891 and King from the earlier censuses were both marked as being born the same place anyway so it wouldnt matter - but I did look up Yorkshire BMD as you suggested but couldnt see where it specified a village, just reg district of Kirkstall as on FreeBMD - am I doing something wrong? Hi Heather No, probably not doing anything wrong. I have found that for many of my Yorkshire ancestors which were in the Yeadon & Otley areas the GRO Index (FreeBMD) gives the registration district - typically Wharfedale or Otley but the Yorkshire BMD indexes give me Yeadon, Rawdon, etc which are the villages themselves. Perhaps for Kirkstall they didn't break it down. >From The Ipswich Journal ( Ipswich, England ), Saturday, August 22, 1891; Issue 9302. A novel attempt was made on Monday to swim from Folkestone to Dover by Enoch TAYLOR, a professional swimmer, belonging to Yorkshire. TAYLOR had his hands and feet tied, and in this way attempted to accomplish a swim of six miles. He entered the water on the flood tide at eight o'clock, in the presence of a good number of spectators. He made slow progress for two miles, when he began to show signs of fatigue, and shortly afterwards was taken out of the water exhausted.
