    1. [YORKSHIRE] YKS SURNAMES LIST UPDATE November 29 2010
    2. Magdalena GORRELL GUIMARAENS
    3. Hi everyone, I'm afraid that it's been a couple of months since I last posted an update to the Yorkshire Surnames List Database. It's been a hectic few months in which computer problems had their say. Now, as I sit in my office, looking out at a very hesitant snow flurry (yes, it is freezing in the North of Portugal - but nothing as bad as you are getting in the UK), I am posting the latest update. First, although quite a few subscribers have very kindly informed me of changes to their email addresses, I have had to delete the following entries because of bouncing emails: Sara de Leon (1) saramiome@aol.com David & Edith Nelson (5) denelq04@bigpond.net.au Tom Robertshaw (1) trobertshaw63@cs.com Tommy Allen (2) tallen@edge.net Jean Payton (1) jeanpayton@earthlink.net George Francis (4) george.francis1@virgin.net All the above will have to re-submit their surnames, with their correct addresses. BTW, when updating your email address, do remember to send me both your old as well as your new address so that I can be certain that I have identified each and every one of your submissions. There have been 35 new submissions to the Master Database. Some are new names, others add to the more or long list of different researchers interested in a given surname and they are all worth a special look: ANELAY, ARMITAGE BLAIR, BOTTOMLEY, BRADLEY, BURGIN, BURGON ELLERBY, ELLISON GREENFIELD(2) HIRST JEFFERSON, JONES MAGSON, MARSHALL, MIDDLEBROOK, MOWTHORPE, MURGATROYD OATES RAYNER, RISHWORTH SHAW, SHEFFIELD, SHIRT TINKER, TURTON VICKERS WAITE, WELLS, WHEELHOUSE, WIDDISON, WIDDOWSON WOODWARD, WRAGG Listening to Sky News and hearing that the artic weather might only get worse, especially in the North, I will think of everyone, particularly my friends and relatives in Yorkshire . Keep safe and warm and don't go out - spend that time working on your ancestors! All the best, Magdalena ___________________________________________________ Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens List Administrator PLEASE NOTE: - For *all *communications regarding the YKS Surnames List, please address emails to: *ykssurnames@yahoo.com not* to the address from which this update is posted. 1. [YORKSHIRE] Lightning Strikes Jos. SMITH's Farm. ( 1769 )
    2. >From Gazetter and New Daily Advertiser ( London, England ), Saturday, May 20, 1769; Issue 12 548. York, May 16. On the 3rd inst. in the afternoon, as a boy belonging to Jos. SMITH , a farmer, in very moderate circumstances, at Woodhall near Calverley, in the West Riding of this county, was harrowing with three horses in a field near his master's house, they were all struck down together by a violent flash of lightning, and the horses all killed on the spot; but the boy providentially received little harm, though when he came to himself, his whip was actually on fire in his hand.

    1. [YORKSHIRE] Death of Harry ROWE ( 1800 )
    2. >From Jackson's Oxford Journal ( Oxford, England ) Saturday, October 11, 1800; Issue 2476. DIED. - In York, Harry ROWE . This well known character was born at York in the year 1726. He was a trumpeter to the Duke of Kingston's Light Horse at the battle of Culloden, in the year 1746; and attended the High Sheriffs of Yorkshire as trumpeter at the assizes upwards of 46 years. He was the master of a puppet show, and for many successive years opened his little theatre in that city during the summer seasons, and attended his artificial commedians to various other parts of the kingdom, during the course of the winter. In the early part of his life he distinguished himself by his filial affection in the support of his aged parents through these various means; and at length ( shewing the vanity and uncertainty of all sublunary greatness, of " Pride, Pomp," and even, "the circumstance of glorious War ! " ) bowed down by age, infirmity, and sickness, he died in the Poor House.

Why don't you e-mail them (address on their website) and ask if someone will look at the registers for you? They will very likely charge a fee but hopefully less than the cost of a certificate. Nothing lost by asking, anyway. Personally, of the nine Hannah Prestons listed at Otley registration district in the 1851 census I can see only one who looks about the right age to have been married in 1854. This is Hannah Preston, 23, unmarried, daughter of John, cloth manufacturer, and Hannah Preston at Mount Pleasant, Guiseley. The others are all either married or too young. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hello Roy: Thanks for that info. I'll look into following up on your suggestion. Actually I was favouring the Hannah PRESTON age 21 in 1851 working as a servant in Headingly, Leeds. She gives her birthplace as Yeadon and if I've got her correct in 1841 her father is James. If I remember correctly the Hannah you suggest gives Guiseley as her birthplace. I realize that Yeadon is quite often quoted as part of Guiseley so you can see my hesitation at claiming one of them without more info. And unfortunately naming patterns don't help as both James and John are given names for some of the grandchildren. His biography was written a over a century ago, for the celebration of the centennial of Ottawa County, Ohio. Longtime residence of Ottawa County had their biographies submitted by family members (i.e., children). No one in the family knew that Frederick PICKARD was a British Army Deserter. I was able to trace him back to Quebec because of the birth of his first child and found his marriage to Mary McGREGOR at the Garrison in Quebec. I ordered is army record and all I have is a muster roll that lists him as a deserter. The British archives statement that they do not maintain records on deserters. So the only thing I have to go on is that he was born 04 Jun 1799 in Yorkshire and that he served with the 68th Regment of Foot Infantry.
