    1. [YORKSHIRE] Lost at Sea ??
    2. Mel Smith
    3. I've stumbled upon a tree on Ancestry that lists my aunt and uncle plus ancestors on her branch which I did not have One ancestor on the tree - Hezekiah William SOWTER is listed as died in 1915 - lost at sea. No sources for this are given. I have searched both FreeBMD and the Yorkshire BMD for a death entry without results. His residence in 1901 was Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire and in the 1911 census he was visiting another family in Sculcoates and his occupation is given as Marine Engineer. I have found his marriage in 1913, the birth of a son in late 1913 and the remarriage of his widow in 1916 So the death entry would appear to be reasonably accurate and occupation and fact of being lost at sea could jibe. FindMyPast deaths at sea only go to 1890 Are there some other sources I can check (preferably online) that would confirm this death Thanks Mel Smith Whitby, Ontario, Canada

    3. Found this via Google cheers Jean in a minus 5 only Leeds Australia swaps summer for Christmas snow (AFP) – 3 hours ago Weather experts said it was not unusual for Australia to experience chilly weather in eastern states in early December, as cold winds from deep in the Southern Oceans sweep upwards. "It's not uncommon to get a dusting of snow along the higher peaks of New South Wales and Victoria every couple of years (at this time)," Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Grant Beard told AFP. Gearon agreed, saying that in previous years, those on the Victorian snowfields had been "having cocktails in the sun one day and skiing the next". 3. Hi Roy & Jean, Thank you for your kind help. I do have the marriage certificate for EMILY JANE SPENCE & ROBERT FOSTER , dated 8-10-1875, EMILY is aged 18, and this gives her birth year of 1857, this is the same birth year that is stated on all the census records that I have found relating to her, I cannot find her on the B.M.D. index for 1857, the only one close was for EMILY LUCY SPENCE, so I thought (wrongly) that she may have been entered wrong. On the marriage certificate it states that her father was JAMES SPENCE a Watchmaker. I have just spoken to a elderly member of the family and she told me that EMILY was born Illegitimate, the result of EMILY,S mother who was working in service and the owner of the house where she worked, the house was HOLLITON or HOLLERTON HALL, I have no idea where that is. Regards, syd ,

The only match for a marriage of Emily Lucy Spence is at Bradford in 1909, so that seems unlikely to have been her. However, there IS an Emily Jane Spence, born Knaresborough circa 1854 in both censuses, daughter of William and Mary Ann Spence, in both censuses living at Kirkgate, Knaresborough and father William being a butcher's master. FreeBMD has the birth of an Emily Jane Spence at Knaresborough in the Sep quarter of 1853. There's also an Emily Jane Spence who married in London City in the June quarter of 1887 and another who married at Knaresborough in the Dec quarter of 1888. The Emily Jane, daughter of William and Mary Ann, was still unmarried in the 1881 census, so she's probably the one who married in 1888. I am wondering if you've got the wrong woman who married Robert Foster! Do you have the marriage certificate? If so, that must presumably show her father. If not, how can you be certain it was your Emily Lucy Spence who married in 1875 in the name of Emily Jane? I can't find an Emily Foster married to a Robert Foster in 1881. There is an Emily J Foster, born 1857, wife of Robert (both hawkers), at Camberwell in 1891 but her birthplace is given as Narford, Sussex. I wonder if you are confused, Syd? A little more information as to what else you know would help. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 1. [YORKSHIRE] Halifax policemen banned from playing football (in 1898)
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. While trawling the 19th Century British Library Newspapers website, I came across the following fascinating news item. This is from a Blackburn, Lancashire, local newspaper but the story refers to Halifax. >From the Weekly Standard and Express, Blackburn, Saturday, November 26 1898..... POLICEMEN AND FOOTBALL "The question as to whether policemen shall be allowed to take part in football matches is likely to come shortly before the Watch Committees of the various towns in the West Riding. For the last two or three years a section of the Halifax Police Force have chafed under the rule forbidding them to play football, and deputations have several times interviewed the Watch Committee with a view to getting the law altered, but in vain. A special meeting of the Watch Committee has been held to discuss the question. The position taken up by a majority of the committee is that whilst cheerfully acquiescing in the members of the force taking part in cricket, yet as regards football, it is a much more violent game, and the liability to injury is such that it would not be fair either to the superannuation fund or the ratepayers to allow policemen to take part in matches. The subject is postponed, however, until the Town Clerk has ascertained the views of Watch Committees in others towns on the subject." So what present-day columnists like Richard Littlejohn in the Daily Mail refer to as "Elf 'n' Safety madness" is not a modern problem. It was extant in 1898. Either that or football was a much more violent game in 1898 than it is today! -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
