Hi there I'm trying to track down my Great Grandfather Charles Coles born (I think) in Stockton-on-Tees Yorkshire about 1870-1876. I was also told his family were London Jews but really have no idea. His parents are listed in his documents as Ellen COHAN & Charles COLES but I can find no trace of any such family. Any help would be so appreciated. Many thanks, Marcelle in Western Australia No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.5.463 / Virus Database: 269.6.1/776 - Release Date: 4/25/2007 12:19 PM

It also sounds possible to me that they were Romany gypsies, who are well known for using different aliases. Charles being a showman and the wife presumably a crystal-ball-gazing medium, plus the fact that they named one of their daughters Nellie Romany, would seem to point to this possibility. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Dear Lisa, Sorry but I have not had any luck finding Hannah FIRTH or family before she was married in 1852 to John SHUTTLEWORTH. Since she named a son Arthur, it's very possible she had a brother by that name. She was born about 1830 though so that is a stretch to have a nephew born in 1896. Have you checked Ships Lists at ellisisland.org or Rootsweb? You miight get more information on their English location roots. Dear Lisa; Please note that my Sarah WATSON was baptized 1785. She married 1815 to Samuel CONSTABLE and their oldest child was born 1815. I do not know the names of other children born to William and Rachel Stubs Watson, if any. At this time, I cannot make a connection. Thank you for your query. I'm back! Sorry it's taken so long for me to publish an update, but I have been out of the country and not always able to get the time or connect to the Internet. Thank you all for your patience. This update, there are several deletions because of bouncing emails. If your name is one of these, I am afraid you will have to resubmit your surnames. Thanks to everyone who sent in bouncing information and also their new emails for me to change. When you do so, please remember to send me both your OLD as well as your NEW email address so that I can identify all your submissions. I don't need a list of your surnames. Bounced emails: Elaine & Norm Whatmore (2) nwhat@gil.com.au Stuart Cockcroft (6) starmail@tiscali.co.uk Philippa Steenholdt (4) the_steenholdts@yahoo.co.uk Lorraine Brunt (5) lonk@22dr.fsnet.co.uk Joan Marshall (1) reunion@istar.ca 50 new surnames have been added to the database: ACKLAM BARKER, BEAN, BERRIMAN, BIELBY, BROWN BUCKLE, BUSH, BUTTERWICK CHAYTOR, CHILD, CORNFORTH, COURSE, CROWTHER DALBY, DONNISON, DOUTHWAITE, DRY, DUNCANSON ELLIS GREENWOOD HAWKIN, HIGGIN, HOYLAND, HUDSON(2) JACKSON, JORDAN KLAMON LOWE, LYNCH MAYNARD, MOFFITT, MOSS PHILLIPS ROBINSON, ROE SAMPLER, SEED, SELLARS, SHEPHERD, SIMPSON SKAITH, STAINER TIVNANN WALKER, WARD, WELBURN, WILSON Remember, if you wish to submit one or more surnames, you need to use the proper format. If you have doubts as to what to do, just go to the YKS Home Page and click on the link for Instructions. If you try to use the format we provide and you get a funny response, this means your ISD is not accepting the format; you will have to follow the instructions for Manual submissions. Please do not copy and paste the format and send it to me. I only get a bunch of blank boxes. Thanks for your paying attention to this. One of my relations was a William Raine that I suspect was born in Romaldkirk in 1791. The 1791 comes from the only William Raine I can find in the 1841 census living in Barnard Castle. He is married to Ruth (as you specify) but his age is recorded as 50? so that would be a birth in 1791 and not 1781. Can you help me confirm if these are on and the same?
