From: "mvs" <mvs5@westnet.com.au> > Does anyone know if any records were kept or was there a union or > guild which listed people employed as weavers or in the mills in > general? > > If so, where would I look? Thanks for any help. > > Marcelle in Western Australia> Depends what period you are talking about. If, as I suspect, you are talking about the mid-late 18th century I very much doubt it. Trade unions didn't get started until towards the end of the century and guilds were for craftsmen and merchants, etc., not ordinary weavers and workers in the mills. Ordinary people weren't thought of as being very important, you see, especially not millworkers! Since most of the mills are long gone, I suspect any records will have disappeared, too, unless you are lucky enough to find some in a record office. However, you don't state specifically which part of Yorkshire you mean, though I imagine you intend the West Riding, since that's where most of the mills were. You could try asking the West Yorkshire Archives' Leeds and Bradford branches. You should be able to find their e-mail addresses with Google but I wouldn't bank on a swift reply! You would probably be better off asking someone on the list who goes to these record offices regularly to enquire next time they're there. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." You seem not to understand the system, if I may say so. Nobody can "look up" a birth without buying the certificate from the General Register Office and to do that you need to know when and where it took place, so you can order it. I notice you've posted this request to Australian lists as well, so presumably you don't know whether this birth took place in Britain or Australia? Not a good start! My wifes 3 x great grandfather William Maxwell moved to Kirkby Moorside some time in the early 1820's or possibly before. We know he married a Mary Anne Saunderson (nothing else known about her)and had at least 3 children Jane, Thomas and Ann. We do not know what happened to Mary Ann or 2 of their children Thomas and Ann. The next time he appears is in Bishop Auckland in Durham with new wife Elizabeth (nee Longstaff). Could their marriage have taken place in or around Kirkby Moorside as we have never been able to find it? Would anyone have access to the Kirkby Moorside Parish Church records in which William and his first wife Mary Ann got married and where there kids where baptised , etc. ? Also could there be an entry in the records to say where William originated. All we know is that on the census returns he is stated as comming from Scotland. Could the Kirkby Moorside Parish Church records hold a clue. Any help on tracing or finding any information on this important part of my wifes family, however small, would be truely appreciated. Thank you all in advance.
