If they are not the ones in Guisboro > could a check please be made in Carlinow.? First of all the most recent census available is the 1901 which is available on a number of different sites. Secondly, the 1921 census is subject to a 100 year closure and it would take primary legislation to get it released before the first working day after 1 January 2022. The government has already made it clear that this is not going to happen. The only way you are going to find out if Mary Ann's surname was KELLY is to get one of the birth certificates. If Guisboro is the place given in the GRO indices, then that is the Registration District which may or may not be the actual place of birth. I think you would probably benefit from reading a few books on the basics of genealogy and family history or a guide to the subject such as this one: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html Incidentally, there's no 1931 or 1941 censuses available either. The former was destroyed during the war and the latter didn't happen. -- Charani (UK)

I respectfully suggest you do a little homework first before asking such a question. There is lots of information about UK censuses and their availability that can be found with a spot of Googling. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." There is a 100 year privacy restriction on UK census returns. The latest census available to the public is 1901 - usually pay per view or subscription based. If I understand correctly, if you have a specific address, you can obtain details from the 1911 census but it will cost £45! Alternatively, the 1911 to be generally available in 2009. Can I ask someone else to confirm that I've got this right? I wouldn't like to misinform any more that I would like to be misinformed myself. If your ancestors owned a business you might be fortunate and find them in a trade directory. Otherwise, again I'm sure others can make further suggestions/leads to follow. Could some nice person check the 1921 Census for a Woods family. I am trying to find Michael, John, Stephen, Owen with their parents Patrick and Mary Ann. I have found births in Guisboro with the mother being Kelly, this could be them. The last address I had for them was in Carlinow, Cleveland, England, but this is pretty close. If they are not the ones in Guisboro could a check please be made in Carlinow.? Terri, USA

I say possible because there are five other names on the page. However, the 1861 census has a John and Ruth Bishop at Keighley, with five children including a Jane aged two. John was 35 and Ruth 32 and this was the only John Bishop in Yorkshire with a wife called Ruth that I could find. The obvious thing to do is apply for the 1849 marriage certificate from the GRO, making sure to specify you want checks in case they didn't marry each other, in which case you will get some of your money back. However, neither Leeds nor Keighley are anywhere near Malton. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
