    1. [YORKSHIRE] Yorkshire pages of GENUKI
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. There seem to be newcomers here who haven't yet discovered GENUKI, probably THE major umbrella website for all UK and Irish genealogical research. The Yorkshire pages of GENUKI are a fantastic resource and should be very high up in everyone's "favourites". Here's the URL.... http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ There are links to every place in Yorkshire, lists of all the parishes, churches, archives in each Riding, where the records are, etc., etc., etc., and buckets more information about the county. By using Genuki, and especially the Yorkshire web pages, probably 95% of the basic questions that get asked here regularly can be answered! For instance, it isn't necessary to ask what the main parish church of Halifax is. Just navigate your way to..... http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Halifax/index.html ...and all will be revealed! -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." There you will find a full description of every parish in the county, including the parish church plus all the chapelries. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hi In the 1861 census, RG 9 piece 3481 folio 91 p. 8 on the second line down, the birthplace for Harriott Wright is listed as Churchanstow, Yorkshire I cannot find anything resembling Churchanstow in either Genuki, or the England_Placenames.pdf I have also looked on the Sheffield supplementary page (Genuki parishes) and cannot find anything containing "stow" The parents are from Mattersey and Retford in Nottinghamshire, got married in Sheffield with the older son and younger son both giving Sheffield as their birthplace. Does anyone familiar with Yorkshire have an idea what this could be? Thanks Charlotte Edwards Vancouver, BC, Canada

George Smallwood married Jane Hotham on December 6, 1741, they had a son named Richard Smallwood born April 24, 1743. Then Jane (Hotham) Smallwood dies September 13, 1743. Then George Smallwood remarries Ann Blacknurn August 12, 1745. Then George Smallwood and Ann Blackburn have a son named Richard Smallwood born April 29, 1753. What I would like to know is: 1. Is this same George Smallwod or is it two different George Smallwood's? 2. The two Richard's I need to know who they both married? 3. I have a Richard Smallwood married to an Margaret Collins, but I have no idea which Richard Smallwood it was who married Margaret Collins if it was Richard born in 1743 or the Richard born 1753. They were all born in Sutton Upon Derwent. Can someone please help me! If anyone is doing research on this family I would like to hear from you!!! Thanks!!!! Also if there is a way of finding a marriage for her fjust from the above info. Hi As she is not in Free BMD then it is more of a problem. If you go to _www.findmypast.com_ (http://www.findmypast.com) and take out a £5.00 Subscription you can buy 50 units. I am afraid it is a case of hard slog through each year if you wish to find the marriage. If you start looking after April 1871 you may be lucky. Have you no other clues about her married name. Are you sure she was married. In 1871 she is living with her widowed mother age 63 born in Kendal in Westmorland and I have sent you the image. I was unable to find the earlier census entries as 1861 is unreadable. 3. Michele, Darlington in Co. Durham has had this service for about a year now and it is available in the local studies 2 computers plus all 25 computers in the E-room. However it is not free, the first half hour is free and thereafter each half hour costs 1 pound. Printing copies is 10 pence. I agree though that this is great for casual users, Terry. -----Original Message----- From: eng-north-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-north-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of michele Sent: 16 May 2007 23:18 To: eng-yorkshire@rootsweb.com; eng-north-yorks@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-NORTH-YORKS] Free access to online records. -or as we in Yorkshire might say "summat fer nowt" !! An article in today's 'Yorkshire Post' states that North Yorkshire County Council's library service has signed up with Ancestry.com to give library users the opportunity to research their family history on 400 computers in the county's libraries. All Ancestry online data will be accessible. This free service means users do not have to pay individual subscription fees. Enjoy. 3. Hello from the United States. How it works here is that each state has the option of signing a contract with Ancestry for on site access. Anyone wishing to use the Ancestry program must use it at the library. No home access via the library. Since state tax dollars are used to pay for this service, anyone can take advantage of it. Ancestry has designed a special program for the libraries called Ancestry Library Edition. Donna
