John Coates was the son of Francis Coates of Sproxton, England, and Francis Coates must have attended Otley Parish Register. After immigrating to Maryland, John Coates changed the spelling of his surname from Coates to Courtis and laster the "is" was dropped and now the surname is spelled Courts. Hi Your listing has prompted me to re-post a family interest. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone with Farrar and/or Gannon as their family interest. My Farrar family were living in Leeds by 1883 when my maternal grandmother Emma was born, the third of 5 children to John Farrar and Elizabeth Ann(nee Dawson). John was from Wakefield and was a miner in Leeds. John and family, including Emma, a paper bag maker, was living at 19 Bertha Mount, South East Leeds at the time Emma married Matthew Gannon at Mount St. Mary's Church, Richmond Hill, Leeds 08 April 1901. Emma and Matthew quickly moved to Ryhope near Sunderland, where Matthew worked in the mines and where his family were concentrated. Sometime in the 1920s or 30s they moved to Doncaster where both Matthew and Emma remained until their deaths. Ann this is the site for the Archives office in Tasmania. http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/ Go to Name Indexes in left hand column. Then Tasmanian Convicts, it gives you a list of all Convicts that came to Tasmania. After 1804, Those who were sent to Australia in the 1700's and early 1800's are under New South Wales. A lot were sent to Norfolk Island, of those sent there some came to Van Diemans Land, Which was renamed Tasmania in the 1850's The rest were dispersed throughout Australia. There is a number beside the convicts name, some will give you reference numbers for the reels of film that can be looked up in the Tasmanian Archives. This is an ongoing project of the Archives office. If you cannot find a reference number for your convict. Please let me know as I can look it up for you.
