    3. Hi Chris The enumerator would leave a form with the householder to be filled in and collected later, if the householder could not fill in the details required, they might ask a younger member of the family or perhaps a neighbour or friend Failing that the enumerator would probably help them to complete it when he collected it No doubt sign language of a sort played its part in the process, necessity is the mother of invention I believe Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Everyone > I have been pondering on this for some time > and wondered what the answer may be. > 1. Find out how to research your family history properly before you start, as you are a complete beginner. You may find my Newbies' Guide (URL below) helpful. Basically, you start with yourself and work backwards a generation at a time, using birth and marriage certificates until you get back before 1901, when the census returns become available. You must document each link along the way and not proceed further until you are sure you have it right. As I said, go and get yourself a decent book on genealogy - there are lots of them out there - and read it thoroughly. Just posing a vague query here is NOT the way to go about it. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Author: k_courts Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14752.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jhn Courts (Coates, Courtis) the immigrant was in Charles County, Maryland, United States, in the year of 1637, and the Maryland records show that John Coates, the imigrant, was 21 years of age when he sailed to America from England on the "Safety", which was commanded by Captain Brent in Auugst 1635, so John Coates must hav been born in 1614 or around that time and he was the son of Francis Coates. John Coates was sworn to oath of fidelity on September 16, 1647. John Coates went back to England in 1649 and arrived back in the colonies with his wife, Margaret Robinson, who was teh daughter of Anthony Robinson and they were married at Otley parish Register in Yorkshire, England. John Coates received a grant of land of 200 acres of land on the west side of the Wischomic River for transplanting his wife, Margaret, to the colonies and his servant, Letton, to the colonies. That is all the information that I have, the Coates family must have been living in Sproxton, England in Yorkshire during from the late 1500's to the early to mid 1600's. That is all the information that I have, any additonal information would be greatly appreciated, thank you kitty courts Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi All, Just a quick query I'm looking for information on how to obtain a copy of an Apprenticeship Record. I have found it in the Register of Apprentices for the City of York (fiche), Ref : D13 1727 - 1756 COCK Thomas 2R. Apprenticed 26 Oct 1721, Born 1711 D13 1727 - 1756 COCK David (##) Apprenticed 27 May 1751 to John Lee and Richard Dent Who do I contact to obtain a copy? I couldn't find anything on the Borthwick site, Genuki. I also tried Origins but their apprentice records are mainly London and some outside so I can't order through them. Do I have enough details to be able to get a copy or do I need to track it further ? Any help appreciated. Cheers Carolyn De Bona Townsville, Aus
