    1. [YORKSHIRE] John Henry Sampson LESITER is lost in 1901
    2. Elaine
    3. Can someone find John Henry Sampson LESITER? He should be in Rotherham on the 1901 census, but I have checked every spelling variation I can think of including the letter 'S' and there is no sign of him. Place: Masbrough, Rotherham, Yorkshire Name: LESITER, John Henry Sampson Birth: 1870/71 Manchester, Lancashire Occupation: Painter or Lithographer Married to: Elizabeth OR Sarah Ann In 1891, he was living on Hope Street, Masbrough, Rotherham with his grandfather who died 1893 and his brother, Henry Clark LESITER. I can find Henry in Sheffield in 1901, but John is just nowhere. In 1894, he married one of the above named women in Rotherham. In 1916, Henry gives his brother, John, as his next of kin on his Attestation Papers for the Canadian Army as: John LESITER, brother, living Masbro, Rotherham, Yorks, England I have checked the 1901 and 1905 White's Directories for Sheffield and Rotherham by name, trade and the Hope Street address used for John in 1891, but there is no sign of him. Hoping for some better sleuthing, Thank you. Kind regards, Elaine in Manitoba, Canada

    1. [YORKSHIRE] Lookups
    2. ANTHONY LAING
    3. It would be very much appreciated if someone could help me with the lookups of some marriages: I am looking for the marriage of Henry Coates / Coats. Occupation Labourer. Through the IGI I have found five potentials: 08/09/1810 Hardrow, Yorkshire. 24/11/1811, Sledmere, East Yorkshire. 03/06/1811 Great Mitton, Yorkshire. 01/12/1812, Whitby, Yorkshire. 12/05/1818, Long Preston, Yorkshire. The son of Henry, William Coates was born in Old Malton, Yorkshire 24/02/1815 if I have the right one. 1851 census states he was age 35 and born in Old Malton. 1861 census states he was 45 and born in Malton. 1871 census states he was age 55 and born in Malton. I don't yet know if William had any siblings. I haven't as yet found a census return with an entry for Henry Coates / Coats. Any help could be very much appreciaed in pin pointing the correct Henry and thus the correct marriage and spouse. Many thanks and best wishes, Anthony Laing

    1. [YORKSHIRE] YKS SURNAMES LIST - 18 June 2007 UPDATE
    2. Magdalena
    3. Dear family historians, Now that summer is approaching and the disgusting weather is keeping more of us indoors, more of us are turning to their research. We have lots of new devotees to geneology, so it is perhaps time to clear up some misconceptions about the YKS Surnames List. Do bear with me. 1. The YKS Surnames List is a totally independent, entirely free, database of Yorkshire surnames and of those who are researching these names. Some names are even entered up to 20 times with the names of 20 different researchers. 2. The list does not belong to rootsweb or Genuki, except for the fact that Genuki very kindly provides the server facilities. I also owe a special thanks to the List Administrators of the several gen lists to which I post these updates although I am not personally subscribed to them. 3. To say that it is a list is perhaps a misnomer as it is not a list in the sense that it is like the gen lists. You cannot subscribe (or unsubscribe) to the database and there are no provisions whatsoever for posting queries or answering your questions. These are not my names, so please do not ask me to do lookups for you. Any questions you have should be posted on the Yorkshire gen list(s) to which you belong. 4. Most importantly, you must read the instructions for submitting surnames and follow them to the letter. This means entering all the essential information you asked for, namely a contact name and email address. This week I deleted 4 different submissions because either the contact name or the email address was not provided. This applies to both those who use the form we provide (when your ISP accepts it) or when you send me your names in a text message. That information must appear in the body of your message to ensure that all your information is correctly entered. 5. And for those who are concerned with privacy issues, all the email addresses are encoded on the index to protect you from harvesters. That is why you only see EMAIL next to a name. 6. It is up to every submitter to keep me informed of changes in email addresses. There is no form for this, you have to mail me directly. When I am informed of a bouncing email, I do a double-check and then delete every single entry with that email. This is what happened, yet again, this week. The following submitters' entries were deleted: Robert Kellett (1) bobkel@bigpond.com Sally Taylor (1) rstaylor@telusplanet.net AJL Hollis (1) AJLHollis@aol.com Richard B Gillion (25) rbgillion@aol.com (These entries were deleted because I was informed: <<< 550 rbgillion IS NOT ACCEPTING MAIL FROM THIS SENDER>>> and all my attempts to contact him at the website he provided went undeeded. Not too many but always welcome new submissions this week: BULMER KELLETT, KENNEDY PROVOST ROBINSON SPEIGHT WALKER Best regards to everyone, Magdalena -- Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens List Administrator INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING NAMES and Home Page: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YKSlist/ PLEASE ADDRESS ALL CORRESPONDENCE TO: ykssurnames@yahoo.com

    1. [YORKSHIRE] St John's Church, Sheffield and surname KELLY
    2. Chris & Meegan Ferguson
    3. Hi there I'm new to the list and trying to help out a cousin find her ancestors. Have Edward Gore KELLY as "Perpt Prelate of St John's" in the 1851 census. The census address was 199 Norfolk Rd, Sheffield. Have done searches for the church and can't find one that matches. Can anyone suggest which church it may have been and whether it is still standing? We understand Edward died around 1862 (can't find him in the Yorkshire census of 1861 unfortunately) but don't know where. Am searching for his son, Frederick Augustus (known as either name) who was born in 1840 and we are trying to find out when and how he may have come to Australia. He married in Rockhampton in 1871 so before then but knowing where the family may have been living in 1861 would be a help. But the church info would be a good start if anyone can point me in the right direction Thanks so much Meegan Darwin, Australia

    3. Meegan, He was in fact "Perpetual Curate of St John's and MA " in the 1851 census. I can't find him or the family in 1861 so I thought he might have gone back to Ireland. Clergy in the 19th century usually went to either Oxford, Cambridge or Trinity Dublin so I checked in the alumni lists and lo and behold information on him! Cambridge University Alumni, 1261-1900 about Edward [Gore]. Kelly Name: Edward [Gore]. Kelly College: ST CATHARINE'S Entered: Michs. 1830 More Information: Adm. pens. at ST CATHARINE'S, Oct. 10, 1830. Of King Street, Kilkenny, Ireland. Matric. Michs. 1830; B.A. 1835; M.A. 1839. Adm. ad eundem at Oxford, 1855. Ord. deacon (Lincoln) 1835; priest, 1836. P.C. of St John's, Sheffield, 1838-55. P.C. of Otterford, Somerset, 1855-8. Died, V. of St Peter's, Drogheda, Oct. 21, 1862. (Clergy List.) This doesn't help with your Frederick Augustus - but suggests you might have to look in Ireland for his departure. 3. Hello Fee from Bristol Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I don't know yet if these will be any of mine but anything's worth a try. Because of the the porkies told over the years I'm just trawling through anything I think might reveal something wonderful! My g grandmother always maintained her parents names were Joseph Drury (and alternative spellings) and Sarah Pratt. He was supposed to be a Jeweller/Watchmaker and she an Elocution Teacher. Of course this could all be just rubbish but she did stick to these names unlike her own which changed a lot. I keep hoping that Sarah & Joseph are going to appear either under the name of Drury or Watson - if only. Thanks again Fee - really nice of you. Interesting that Thomas comes up as c 22 Feb 1829, s/o William and Maria, but I didn't see the John and maria link. Anyway, I guess you will have covered all this in great detail. Good luck - and if I come across anything from that area, I will post it. Graham Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I sure am still researching Thomas Iveson! I can tell you on his death certificate it indicated his father's name was John, and his mother Mary. (Didn't indicate Mary's last name) I'm not sure how accurate the info is, the informant was Thomas' wife, Sarah Barker Iveson, who likely had never met his parents. All I know is that Thomas had carved on his tombstone that he was born January 19, 1829 in Pocklington England. I still am amazed that he had that inscribed, if he hadn't I would not know where to look for him. He immigrated to the US (Wisconsin) before 1841 (he appears on tax rolls in 1841) I would sure like to be able to connect him with his IVESON family in England. I have had little success to this point. Hope to hear more about your IVESONS! Best Wishes, Elise, MN. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There was then another NELLIE WATSON born in the June quarter of 1885 at Stockton, Vol 10a page 78, who is probably one of those who appears in the 1891 census, aged 6. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 1. [YORKSHIRE] STOTT appologies

    3. Wendy and List Members, Forgive me for being so tired and confused and not picking up on my error when I read through my previous post. Caroline STOTT married 19 July 1847 aged 26 yrs, to John DRYDLE aged 23 yrs. She a "dressmaker" and he a "tailor". She died 1882 in St Kilda, Australia aged 61 yrs. It is thought she was born "about" 1821, probably in Huddersfield. Her father is listed on her marriage certificate as Joseph STOTT, and he was a "traveller" Many thanks, Melissa in OZ. ----- Original Message ----- From: "BJ & MJ Hallyburton" <hallyburton1@bigpond.com> To: <eng-yorkshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2007 10:48 AM Subject: Re: [YORKSHIRE] STOTT > G'day Wendy, > > Sorry to have taken so long to reply to your message (work and family take > up precious researching time lol). > > Caroline STOTT, what I know for "certain" was 26 yrs old when she married > John DRYDLE, who was 23 (this is from their marriage certificate). 3. G'day Wendy, Sorry to have taken so long to reply to your message (work and family take up precious researching time lol). Caroline STOTT, what I know for "certain" was 26 yrs old when she married John DRYDLE, who was 23 (this is from their marriage certificate). She was a "dressmaker" and he was a "tailor". Sadly their marriage certificate does not list witnesses, so I am unable to find siblings for her. Both Caroline and John resided at the time of their marriage at Old Street, Ashton under Lyne. Her father, Joseph STOTT, was listed as a "traveller" Caroline was listed as 61 yrs of age when she died in St Kilda, Australia. It is "thought" that Caroline was born in Huddersfield, (I have yet to find proof of her birth, to be able to apply for a birth or any baptism record) to Joseph Stott and Rebecca Hirstwood. Many thanks, Melissa. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy" <wgb@iinet.net.au> To: <eng-yorkshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2007 7:05 PM Subject: Re: [YORKSHIRE] STOTT > Hi Melissa, > > What is Caroline STOTT's year and place of birth?
