    3. Hello, Roy, I have no doubt that there was never such a marriage. (I paid AUS $39 to be told that!) The marriage date was from a family member, (who may have been trying to 'protect' us), although we already knew that we had one convict in the family. However, since that one convict, we have already found another few!! (unmentioned in the tree!) George and Charlotte were too late to have been convicts, however, so I am told. Re: Another "Family Story". "George SHEPHARD was at a dance and was dancing with this girl called Charlotte and they both discovered their surnames were the same." They went out together and "got married." My husband would really like to know the truth about the SHEPHARDs and so would I.! What else can I say which I haven't already? I do know that people often lied and am very understanding of that fact. Still, my 92 + year old mother in law would like to know the truth. (She's totally 'compos mentis' and didn't turn a hair when I said this week that there wasn't such a marriage and she replied that "maybe they weren't married at all"! ) Slight shock to hear that from someone that age ! Best wishes, Carolyn. 3. Hi, Dave, On second thoughts: I don't know about the information I have about George. I 'suspect' it may be an untruth. There is no reference at all to where in Yorkshire, and I have looked up all the Census I can and really have not found anything. Not that I asked the reasearcher who looked up the marrriage to do so, but he looked up every Census etc. and I was a little perturbed, because I also have Ancestry and we all, obviously have access to FreeBDM. All the family member has written that George was b. to a James and a Sarah WINTERBOTTOM, with no dates. Do I presume that he was illegitimate? On his DC, the Informant (for which Certificate I'm still waiting from www.nsw.gov.au ) must have known that his parents were a James and a Sarah. Alternatively, George told them that. Would that mean he knew he was illegitimate and was proud of the fact that he knew his parents' names? It's all a mystery to me and I'd love some help. Best wishes, Carolyn. 1. [YORKSHIRE] NEW LISTER RE: SHEPHARD.
    2. Carolyn and Darryl
    3. Greetings to All, 1st posting to the List, so hoping for a little advice/suggestions. This is the "Family Story". George SHEPHARD (b. abt 1829, Yorkshire to a James and Sarah) married on 17 Apr, 1854, Derbyshire a Charlotte SHEPHARD (b. abt 1832, Derbyshire.) [I have had a researcher try to find this marriage and it doesn't exist!] George and Charlotte sold everything in England and bought a ship/boat and sailed to Australia with 2 little daughters, Sarh and Hannah. Baby Mary Jane was born abt 1860 at sea. They sold the boat/ship and bought a bullock and dray and travelled across the Blue Mountains to the Rockley/Bathurst area, where they (? bought) a farm called "Summerhill" at Rockley and proceeded to have another 7 children between 1862 and 1874. Fact: George died in 1879. (I have sent for his DC.) In 1885, Charlotte was listed in the Bathurst Landholders as having over 1,300 acres at "Summerhill", Rockley + stock. Son James was also a Landholder in 1885 at O'Brien's Creek, as was an F. SHEPHERD at Box Ridge Common, Box Ridge. Fact: Charlotte died in 1916 at Rockley, aged 83. Do any kind listers have any ideas as to where I can go from here? Best wishes, Carolyn. AUS.

Presumably an Australian document, such as the birth certificate of one of the children? Where in Derbyshire was the marriage supposed to have taken place? It is unlikely Charlotte's maiden name was also Shephard, unless she was a cousin. Shephard is a very common name, with numerous variants, so any search would have to take into account different spellings. It doesn't appear at FreeBMD, so far as I can see, nor does George's birth/baptism appear on the IGI. How do you know he was born in Yorkshire? You may have to face the fact that he lied somewhere along the line and there never was a marriage. My advice would be (if you haven't already done so) to subscribe to the SHEPHARD surname list as you seem to have very little Yorkshire related information. Yorkshire's a big place and you really need to be able tp pinpoint more acurately where in Yorkshire George was born. Cheers, Dave Jassie - List Administrator

    3. Hi Chris I notice you have Bairstow in Bradford. I also have Bairstows there and wonder if we have any connection. I have Paul Bairstow/Bastow, born 1794 and who lived in Lttle Horton at some stage. He married Mary North. Paul's father was ABraham Bastow, and I am still trying to establish who Abrahanm's father was - I know he was another Abraham, but which one is the puzzle!! A son of Paul was Benjamin, born 1826, who was later in Leeds. Do any of these tie in with any of yours? Look forward to hearing. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: HelenOram Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14758.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Richard, I am also descended from Thomas & Alice BUTTERFIELD. I have not been able to go any further back from Alice, as there are no baptism records for Aysgarth prior to around 1700. However there were Dodsworths in the Thoralby area much earlier from other sources such as wills, tax records etc. It is just not possible to tie them all up into a family tree. I suspect that we are connected to the Dodsworths of Thornton Watlass but the link would probably be back in the 15th century. Again with Thomas BUTERFIELD it is not possible to know exactly who his father was but it was probably either a Richard or a Peter BUTTERFIELD. There is a will of John BUTTERFIELD of Thornton Watlass who died in 1664 who leaves money to his BUTTERFIELD relations at Thoralby, as well as establishing the BUTTERFIELD charity for the poor of Thoralby. I do not think it is possible to go much farther back with this tree either due to the poor baptism records at Aysgarth. There is one Peter Butterfield who was a real character and was either always getting into trouble , fighting or trying to con people out of property - see the National Archives records and search for Peter Butterfield! http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp?j=1 Another later Richard BUTTERFIELD must also have upset his neighbours as from the Quarter Sessions records held at Northallerton. 18 Feb 1774 John Hird of Wensley and James Watters of Harkerside bound for £20 ... to answer such matters as assaulting and beating Richard Butterfield of Wensley. This would be the Richard born Thoralby in 1730, who married Margaret Scott in Wensley in 1756 and who died in Wensley in 1818. I've no futher details.
