Wonder if any knowledgable person on this list would know if Irish folks coming to reside in Yorkshire (mostly at Whitby) would have had to register and so be on a list somewhere? And is Soulcoates in Durham? Questions, questions. Thanks for the help I have had on this list with my Feineys and Dillons - beyond my wildest imagination...Iris Page in Auckland, New Zealand
Hi Iris, Sculcoates is an area in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire. If you look at the Genuki Site, you can learn more about places in England: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/index.html As for the lists of Irish people to Yorkshire, I dont think so, but maybe someone out there can correct me on this. Cheers Wendy Perth, West Aust IrisP wrote: >Wonder if any knowledgable person on this list would know if Irish folks >coming to reside in Yorkshire (mostly at Whitby) would have had to register >and so be on a list somewhere? >And is Soulcoates in Durham? My mycroft ancestors were, in the majority, from Shirland and Alfreton but BMD's often registered in Belper. Some certainly moved to Sheffield particularly my grandmother Alice (b1894), parents Matthew and Annie Elizabeth Hill. She married John Webster and had only one child, Doris, my mother. Before the 1920s, somebody coming from anywhere in Ireland to England would not have had to register anywhere. It was all the same country and there would be no more need to register than there would be if you were arriving from another English county. Since the early 1920s, the situation is the same for people in Northern Ireland, but the rest of Ireland is a separate country (Eire, or the Republic of Ireland) and movement from one to the other would count as immigration. So there would be no official record if this happened before the 1920s, and there might be if it happened after that. Kim --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail is the world's favourite email. As far as I know, the only connection the SLOMANs had with York is that my great-grandfather's younger sister, Charlotte Elizabeth SLOMAN, b 1845, Great Yarmouth, a "Professor of Dancing", is believed to have visited a girlhood friend, Mary MARTIN, there. They were students of dancing together under a Mary BIRCH, (1861 Census, Kensington, I think). There is an oral family tradition that another photograph in the album, although untitled, was always known as "Great Aunt Charlotte"! That photo was taken in YORK, by T.R.(?) GOWLAND, of York. Other than that, there is no known connection with York, and I have never come across the name HORBURY in the search! I was a bit uncertain about the spelling and written form of the name, but nothing else comes up, no matter how many types of spelling, or initial letter combinations I try. Was not able to pick up a Birth entry for Mary Elizabeth on FreeBMDs or Ancestry, otherwise I would be tempted to buy her! birth certificate to settle the question. My great-grandfather left a wonderful photograph album, but only two photos bore names, i.e. Mary Elizabeth's, and his nephew, George Sloman MARR, dated October 1892, and I have traced his family down to the present day, almost, in the US. I believe this would have been written by Frank's married sister, Fanny Maria MARR, as it was NOT Frank Read's writing from other samples. Sorry to have taken so long but thought since you asked, you just MAY have an idea. Thanks for any help. Doreen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Is anyone researching these names in the Warley area? Chris
Hope everyone that can attend enjoy themselves at York FH Fair. (Go along & say hello to the helpers on Pontefract FHS stall for me) I will be at Badsworth helping Brenda with a stall for Pontefract FHS at the annual Church/School fair. Hope the weather holds, we had a great day last year. Castleford is having a 1940's festival all this week. Vintage cars, period costumes & old fashion entertainment (e.g. Maypole dancing) will close the fun filled week off on Saturday. 10.30 - 3.30 St Andrews Church, Ferrybridge is having open day on Saturday. It will be opened by Ian Clayton at 11pm. What a shame we can't be everywhere, but I hope you will all have a good, dry day wherever you will be. I'm sure there are other things going off too near you to entertain you all. Don't forget the Pontefract Liquorice Festival week 7 - 15th July. Yes, Pontefract FHS will be there to help you, lots of new publications, including Pontefract Cemetery M.I's & Featherstone Cemetery M.I.'s.
