However, if the records have been extracted to the IGI and are online at Familysearch then when you find one child, you click on the reference number for the film, then enter in the parents' names in the appropriate boxes and the region and this should come up with any other children - so long as they were christened in the same parish. 3. No, a message to the list that is copied to the gateway address will not go to the message board; it only comes to the list. Anything posted to the message board comes to the list, but not the other way around. 3. Hello Lynda, You are welcome. My husband reminded me we had visited that pub a few times many years ago. I was born in Acomb but before leaving York we lived just across the road in Bishophill and called for a drink on our way into town on a couple of occasions, it was very dated but had a nice atmosphere. I dream of returning to York in the future, it has changed so much since we left in 1980, but my heart will always be there. Good luck with your research. 3. Hello, Roy, I think your answer was a little harsh. Not everyone knows about the IGI. Nor how to use the Parish and Probate Records. viz. "surely you know what that is?" : a lot of people who are just starting out on their family history *don't know what that is*. Why not be kinder and say "Have you looked at: www.familysearch.org.uk/ and follow the links for 1. Search and 2. International Genealogical Index.?" Click on the above Links. I think it's just a matter of manners and a well brought-up person would say that. You see, Roy, there are basic amateurs, who are trying to make a start on their ancestors. (I was one once and I am sure you were one, too?) We all have to start 'somewhere' and if it happens to be on a list (where I once started and met nothing but 'friendly, helpful answers and willingly-given information' (vix. on the www.eng-lan-bolton.org.uk list, I would never have found my ancestors back to 1730. No offence intended. Just my thoughts when I read the message. Please remember to be humble and not arrogant and that everyone has to begin somewhere. Plus ask somewhere!!How on earth can they begin if they don't ask questions? I'm sure you did once upon a time and I did too. All the best, Carolyn. 3. You first need to use census records to find out where he said he was born. 1841 doesn't give exact birthplaces but indicates he was born in county as was his wife andf the children 1841 England Census about Jabez Harrison Name: Jabez Harrison Age: 5 Estimated birth year: abt 1836 Gender: Male Where born: Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Thorner Hundred: Skyrack (Lower Division) County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Tadcaster Sub-registration district: Bramham Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Elijah Harrison 3 Isabella Harrison 10 Mo Jabez Harrison 5 Martha Harrison 30 Robert Harrison 6 Samuel Harrison 25 Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 1311; Book: 21; Civil Parish: Thorner; County: Yorkshire; Enumeration District: 9; Folio: 24; Page: 14 1851 census says he was born in Thorner as were all the family including George Tempest who was his brother in law. 1851 England Census about Samuel Harrison Name: Samuel Harrison Age: 39 Estimated birth year: abt 1812 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Martha Gender: Male Where born: Thorner, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Thorner County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Tadcaster Sub-registration district: Appleton ED, institution, or vessel: 1a Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 109 Household Members: Name Age Alfred Harrison 3 Isabella Harrison 10 Jabesh Harrison 15 Martha Harrison 41 Martha Ann Harrison 1 Mo Mary Ann Harrison 1 Mo Robert Harrison 16 Samuel Harrison 39 Samuel Harrison 7 George Tempest 43 Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2352; Folio: 307; Page: 26 Samuel senior doesn't appear with the family on the 1881 census and Martha is a widow, so you would need to look on the BMD records to find the date of Samuel's death, and then look up in a Probate calendar to see if he left a will. There is an entry on the IGI for the christening of Samuel Harrison in Thorner in 1812, but it is a patron submission. 3. From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc- > > i forgot to mention that all of his children were born in Thorner, so > it may be likely he was too.> The IGI has the christening of a Samuel Harrison at Thorner on 12 Apr 1812, son of Robert Harrison and Elizabeth. However, the batch number indicates that this is a private LDS member submission and, therefore, unreliable. You will have to consult the original registers, which, as I explained to you previously, can be borrowed at a Mormon FHC. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." This is an officially extracted entry because it has an M batch no., as opposed to a private LDS submission (and if you don't understand the difference, it is fully explained at my Newbies' Guide website, URL below). The Source Call reveals it to be from the bishop's transcripts for Thorner, and these, too, are explained in my Newbies' Guide. 3. Hi, Does anyone know if there is any coverage in the National Roll of the Great War for areas such as Tadcaster, Ulleskelf, Barwick in Elmet? I know there is a volume for Leeds but don't know if this just covers Leeds itself or surrounding areas. I think perhaps there may be one for York but this is what I am trying to find out. Many thanks Carol
