Armley is Leeds (well it is now, back then it was a village near Leeds). Thinking on paper here:- 1) possibility she was born on a house or farm called Linton - in which case there's fat chance of finding out where that was; 2) possibility that armley baptism could be her but you can't prove it (and my gut feeling is that it's not the right one); 3) question do the names of the witnesses on the MC to Spence give any clues? 4) what I'd do next find out what the full entry on the parish register says for martha's first marriage to michael mortimer. 5) have you looked on the IGI and done a sibling search? Hi folks, Just a quick reminder regarding Message Board posts. There are times when messages are posted which are not Yorkshire related. In the case of the recent "BEBB" post, I moved this to the BEBB Message Board as soon as I spotted it. Please be patient as I don't spend 24 hours a day on my computer so there are times when various admin tasks are delayed. Also, as stated at the end of every such post - "Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board." Please remember this when replying to MB posts. Cheers, Dave Jassie

He had to be earning a certain amount and/or paying a certain amount rent or own a property of particular value. If he lost his job or was unable to meet his financial obligations for some reason, then he'd lose the right to vote. Therefore, if his son took over the financial responsibilities, and was also elibible on age grounds, then he would get the vote. I don't know if there was an upper age limit at the time or not but if there was Jabez could have reached that. There is a website that give the criteria and when the rules changed, but I can't find it for the moment. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What do you think the connection is? Could you give us your grandfather's first name(s)? Have you tried looking for your grandfather's obituary? The Mississauga Library might be able to help. Contact them via library.info@mississauga.ca They might be able to find it in the newspaper archives. >From that you might pick up more information about where he was born and the date, etc. FYI ... I've found a George A. Leppington born 1911 in Bridlington - but without a first name, don't know if this is your grandfather or not. Author: CharaniB Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14802.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There were certain conditions that had to be met in order to be on the electoral roll back then. It's very likely that Jabez didn't meet the criteria, or ceased to meet them, and so wasn't eligible to vote but his son did qualify and was therefore eligible. Hence the apparent anomaly. Fred's absence from the census could have been the result of an oversight on the part of the enumerator when he wrote up the household schedules into the enumerator's books (which is what we see). It could be that he was away, or expected to be away, on the night of the census so wasn't included. Ada may have been in service so not at home for the census. Author: katherineandco Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14802/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is quite complicated to explain, but I'll give it a go. Here is the link to the 1881 census return for my ancestors: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=uki1881,&rank=1&tips=0&gsfn=jabez&gsln=harrison&gsby=1837&gsb2co=3251,England&gsb2pl=5292,Yorkshire&gsdy=&gsd2co=1,All Countries&gsd2pl=1, &sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4;_80000002;_80000003&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&o_iid=21417&o_lid=21417&o_it=21417&offerid=0:7935:0&fh=1&recid=10054971&recoff=1 2 As you can see, the head of the house is Jabez Harrison, living with his wife and his youngest son. They live at 8 Claremont Place. He had two other children called Ada and Fred, who were on the '71 census, but have gone by '81 and do not return by '91. But, i looked on the Electoral Register for 1881 at 8 Claremont Place and the one name written down for that year is... Fred Harrison. Fred is the name written for every subsequent year in the 1880s. This has confused me because he does not show up on the census living at 8 Claremont Place in 1881, and surely it would have been Jabez, as head of house, who was written in the Electoral Register, not his son? Now, i thought that maybe Jabez had died in 1881 before the register was taken, and maybe Fred had moved back home, but i have searched the death index and cannot find a Jabez who died in 1880-1883 in Leeds. So, i guess i am asking why Jabez would not be in the electoral register? He appears 10 years before then, in 1871, but not after. Thanks for any help you can give me, i know it's a bit confusing.
