Author: JudyElkington Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14816.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Ron It is not very easy just to find a baptism. There are many possible churches and the best verification ytou can get is a birth certificate. You do not need to give the names of the parents but just put in the Name, year, quarter followed by the volume no 9b and page no.626. The names of the parents will be on it when it comes back to you. you don't need to enter them on the details and this way you can be sure who the parents are. You can obtain this from http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/login.asp and it will cost £7.00. and takes about 5-7 days. Good hunting, Judy Elkington Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know they don't appear in the 1841. I looked at the LDS site and yes it does say Izabelle dau of James and Hannah but it is a patron entry only so may only be a guess. My information came from the filmed parish registers. I am spending my holiday, the week after next, at Beverley archives and will double check to see if there is an entry for Isabel and for any relevant burials.Because of my interest in the village I have a lot of information but not necessarily gathered at the same time so I am constantly reviewing the info. I have had the good fortune in the past to view the actual original register. Cheers Lynn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: phoenixantiques Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/14814.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Lynn: Thank you so much for replying! I am just starting the England phase of research. Do you know if the family you mentioned had brothers William, James, and John who went to the USA? The family I'm researching has William born June 12, 1812, son of James Hilton. (This is a little off your date of 1811.) These three brothers settled at first in Charlotte Center, Chautauqua County, NY around 1830 or so. If this fits, I'd love to exchange more info. Was Esther a sister to James who was baptised in 1787? The Isabelle Hilton I mentioned was on a Mormon Church site as having been born in 1830 to James. Thank you for your help. He also returned there after the war and performed with his troupe of entertainers called The Ped'lers. I live too far from Whitby to visit the local library so could anyone tell me how I can find out about this. Any help would be very much appreciated. But why don't you do the obvious thing and look at the usual sources, like census returns, FreeBMD, etc. Entering simply "Whiteside" at FreeBMD, for instance, and the county as Yorkshire West Riding, North Riding or East Riding will produce a list of Whiteside BMDs. Another obvious resource is the 1881 census, which is free at various websites. I can tell you that from the Surname Atlas program (a brilliant little program on CD that produces instant distribution maps from the 1881 census data) that though Lancashire is by far and away the principal home of the surname, there were 45 entries in Yorks WR and 35 in Yorks ER and 10 in Yorks NR in 1881. The largest concentration were in Hull and Sculcoates, with 11 in Bradford. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
