From: Anita Cairns <neta1uk@yahoo.co.uk> Which COWLING do you mean? There are two places in Yorkshire of the name, one to the south of Skipton and the other in the North Riding near Bedale. Neither were originally parishes in their own right. For the Cowling near Skipton, the National Index of Parish Registers for the West Riding refers me to Kildwick. This shows that Holy Trinity, Cowling, only became a separate parish in 1844 and the church was erected 1845. The registers are apparently still with the incumbent. It depends what date you are after, but I imagine before that date people from Cowling would have gone to Kildwick St Andrew, the original registers of which are now at the North Yorks CRO at Northallerton, with BTs at the Borthwick Institute in York. The other Cowling is part of the township of Burrill with Cowling, a township of the parish of Bedale, and only had a mission church erected in 1856. The Bedale St Gregory registers are also at Northallerton and the BTs are at the West Yorkshire Archives at Leeds for some reason. I suggest you go to the Genuki pages on Yorkshire for more information. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." I am trying to find where the Cowling Parish Registers are held. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anita. ___________________________________________________________ Want ideas for reducing your carbon footprint? Visit Yahoo! For Good http://uk.promotions.yahoo.com/forgood/environment.html

Nuala / Listers EXTREMELY UNLIKELY INDEED to be currency figures (- to the point of being wrong, in fact...!!!) Christine - ......without even looking at the Register - I would guess ...acres / roods / perches........in that order Say after me - 40 perches = 1 rood, 4 roods = 1 acre (we have gone metric in New Zealand some time ago - hectares and square metres...) Hi Christine and Nuala Nuala, I think you misunderstood the question? The three figures are the estimated extent of the land of each owner A = Acres R = Rood P = Poles For what they represent see http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~alan/family/N-Units.html (or just google the three words) The last column is in Pounds and Shillings Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Christine, > > It is pounds shillings and pence. > > Nuala ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >> Hi >> Can anyone help please >> in the 1873 LAND REGISTER YORKSHIRE WEST RIDING >> in the Extent of Lands column >> can anyone tell me what the figures mean, what kind of measurment is it? >> e.g. 105 1 36 and the next column is Gross Estimated rental >> Thank you >> Christine

How far is it from Howden to Skipwith! I did an IGI search on Robert Sissons, guest-emating a birth year of 20 years prior to the marriage date of 1807, and found two possibles, one was the Robert for Howden. This surely looks like a good possible. What I'd really like to know is if the marriage records give the names of the parents. Are you familiar with those records? I can surely order the microfilm from the FHS in Salt Lake City, but if you are familiar with Yorkshire records and know that the parents names are not included, then it would pretty much be a waste of time and money. I surely do appreciate the help! Xana in Greeley Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Ann or "Nanny" was the youngest of 11 children of Thomas and Darbyson and Saltmarsh Ainsley. (Anesley, as it is spelled in the records. Robert and Nanny had at least these children: 1.
