Hi, I hope to be in Ripon next month, and while I am there would like to visit the grave of a great uncle. I know the approximate date of his death (1940) but not the whereabouts of his grave. Is there a central registry held by the local council (Harrogate?) and if there is, how does one access it from overseas? Also, does anyone know if the residential buildiing known as 'Littlethorpe Villas' that existed in the 1930s, was in the village of that name, or in Ripon? Thanks in anticipation for any help. Nick Wilson

According to the IGI my grandfather, Albert Edward KERRY was christened in Manningham, Bradford on 24 January 1894. Although the father is named as Albert Edward but I am fairly sure that is incorrect. On his birth certificate only his mother Annie KERRY is named so he was very likely illegitimate. I hope that the original record may provide more information than the IGI entry, as I have no idea where his mother came from or who his father might have been. Calverley is close to Leeds, according to my map. According to 1851, Ruth's mother Phoebe is staying with her. Phebe Bilton is 66, born Middlesex, London. Doesn't state whether she is a widow/married. This might be Phoebe's death registration in Leeds district, apr-jun 1855, vol 9b, p207 Phoebe Bilton is in Leeds in 1841 - transcribed as Bitton Phoebe Bilton, 55, mangle woman, not born in Yorks. Form the 1841, it looks like their eldest child, Thomas, was born c1837, so they probably did marry before registration began. There is a birth registration for a George Cairns, jan-mar 1839, Durham district, vol 24, p 79 If you order the cert. using Ann and Thomas as checking points, if it's the wrong cer. you won't be charged the full £7.00 Hope this helps.
