Hi, Christopher, we are back home in Florida, and I am looking at all the e-mails I did not have time to read last summer. Please tell me where your Brown ancestors came from. I am looking for a John Brown, b. Yorkshire 1712, with son, John Brown, b. Yorkshire 1742, d. Wallace Bay, Cumberland Co., NS, Canada (a Loyalist who came to Canada from New York, Westchester Co.). Hi John, There won't be a marriage certificate available for this marriage as civil registration wasn't introduced in the UK until 1837. What you could get is a copy of the entry in the parish register of the chuch. The registers for Bilbrough in this period are held at The Borthwick Institute in York, they do have a copying and postal service for people who can't visit in person. see- http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/bihr/ Be aware that the IGI shows two marriages for a John Pegg in 1825. 1. John Pegg and Mary Foster at Bilbrough, 2 August 1825. 2. John Pegg and Mary Pickering at Everingham, 6 June 1825. Everingham and Bilbrough aren't that far apart, possibly 20 miles, I mention it so you can be sure you've got the correct one. A most useful genealogy site for finding out where records are held is GENUKI- http://www.genuki.org.uk/. When did your folks leave England? If they were still here in 1851 their places of birth should show on the census. Good Hunting. This has the marriage at Bilbrough on 2 Aug 1825 of JOHN PEGG and MARY FOSTER - M071701, source the bishop's transcripts for Bilbrough 1631-1857. As the M prefix indicates that this is an official extraction from the records, as opposed to a private submission by an LDS Church member (which are sometimes of dubious authenticity), I think you can take it that Foster was indeed her maiden name. However, it is extremely unlikely that any record either from the parish registers or BTs are going to show parents' names of either party. Except in rare cases, you don't get parents' names on a marriage record before 1837 when civil registration came in, and even then only fathers. And since Foster is a VERY common surname, finding Mary's baptism won't be easy. The marriage record is unlikely to show ages, either, unless one of the parties was a minor, i.e. under 21, and marrying with parental permission. As well as the names of the parties marrying, in 1825 the record would give details like the bridegroom's occupation, marital status (bachelor and spinster or if one was widowed), parishes of residences (if one party came from a different parish it should say so), signatures of the parties, names and signatures of witnesses and the name of the clergyman officiating. But NOT names of parents. Bilbrough is the just a few miles from York and the Bilbrough parish registers are at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, York, who have a vast collection of Yorkshire records and a website that is easily found with Google. You can see for yourself the whereabouts of the Bilbrough records by going to: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ARY/Bilbrough/index.html Are you not aware of the wonderful Yorkshire pages at Genuki, which is the umbrella website for all UK and Irish research? You should be! This will tell you everything you need to know and you will even find a description of the village and photo of the church where your ancestors were married, by my cousin Garry Stockdill. You could e-mail the Borthwick Institute and ask if they will do a search for the marriage record and send you a copy. They will charge you a modest fee. Alternatively, you should be able to view the film at your nearest Mormon Family History Centre. If they haven't got it they will probably order it for you from SLC. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Hello, The marriage record below is for my great-great-great-grandparents, John Pegg and wife Mary. They were married August 2, 1825 at Bilbrough, York, Yorkshire, England. Although, I have no copy of this marriage record, I need advice on how to get it. I can accept a scanned copy of the marriage record sent via e-mail or send a hard copy to me via postal mail. Either way, I will gladly pay all charges. It was someone else who found the marriage record for me. I believe that Mary's maiden name is Foster but I have not verified it and wish to do so. How do I find out her maiden name and her parents name too? Later, after they were married, they went to the United States. I live in the state of Indiana, U.S.A. Can someone please help me. Thank you. John W. Pegg

If you get his birth certificate it will tell you his mother's name and where he was born and unless he was illegitimate his father's name and occupation. There appear to be a lot of George Heeley's in the Dewsbury area so make sure you get the right one. You should be able to find them on the 1901 census and away you go. If you are in the UK your local main library should have access to the 1901 census. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
