Hi Marie What was his name ? If a career soldier when did he serve to or do you not know as yet ? I ask as a lot depends on when he served to, as to how accessible his service records might be Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > Can anyone help me with information on the above regiment please. I am new to the list and hope that somewhere out there, there may be a connection to this family. My husbands grandmother seems to have had a very chequered life and it has taken me about 20 years to piece all the information together. Ada HOLBROOK was born in 1885 at Wood Street, Mexbrough, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Holbrook. Ada's mother, later married John PEAR in Swinton and had two more daughters Annie Elizabeth and Sarah Ellen. Ada had a daughter Alice in 1906 to Frederick COOPER. He is named on the birth certificate. Ada married Frederick COOPER in 1908 in Swinton. They also had a son, Thomas Edward in 1908, who died in 1909. Ada then appears to have left Frederick sometime after this. By 1911, Ada was boarding in Bradford, and also boarding there was Thomas William STONE. In May 1911 Ada had twins Mary and Florence at Daniel Street, Bradford and the father is named on the birth certificates as Thomas Stone. Both signed the certificate. She signed as Ada Cooper. The next time that I find Ada she is on her own in 1913, when she is living at 16, Edlington street, Denaby Main and working as a domestic housekeeper for the SAMPSON family. Here she gave birth to ERNEST COOPER. No father on the birth certificate and Ada is just using the name of Cooper. In the same year, Ada, Mary and Ernest entered the Rotherham workhouse and were in and out of there until 1916 when Ada finally left with Ernest, but he was later entered back in there. Mary and Ernest were brought up in different children's homes in Rotherham. They never saw their mother again. In 1917, Ada was living at 43, Bank Street, Mexbrough and gave birth to a son Joseph COOPER. Her occupation is given as a domestic housekeeper on his birth certificate. Her maiden name of HOLBROOK is also on it but no fathers name. In 1924, Ada died in Springwell House, Doncaster, a workhouse cum hospital. She was 39. So, my quest now is to find any descendants of the children that she had. My father in law never knew that he had any family, even though they were half siblings, and lost touch with his sister MARY COOPER, who I believe died in a home somewhere down South in the 1960/70's but we are not sure about that. The problem is that it was never spoken about and no one left to ask. Sadly, I have found a death of ALICE HOLBROOK COOPER aged 89 and registered in Huddersfield, as late as 1995, so it would appear that she did not marry but have not found any trace of FLORENCE COOPER/STONE, the other twin born in Bradford in 1911 or JOSEPH COOPER born in Mexbrough in 1917. If anyone can help with any information on any of these people or families, I would be most grateful and thank you for reading my long message. Carol Cooper in Sheffield

I was always told I had a relative from Whitby who was 'lost at sea' and think I've found the name but would love to find out more, if anyone knows anything. Think William Hutton was born 1790, married Isabella Scurr in 1812 in South Shields (she was born Whitby), they had 5 offspring and lived in Cliff Lane, Whitby. He doesn't appear in the 1841 census and in the 1851 census Isabella is described as a sailor's widow. Does anyone know anything about this relative or the family? Thank you for your explanation. Just when you think you understand something, it changes. I read with amusement Comments Prince Phillip is reputed to have said about the difficulty of operating a TV remote which seems simple to a 10 year old grandchild. I understand exactly what he means. Somehow I have missed why decisions were made to link some of the lists I am on with Gateway and why we have to reply to two sources. What was wrong with the system we had? In order to read what we wrote to a list one had to look up the archives whereas many of these other sources seem to be freely available to anyone. It no longer feels as secure as it once did. I think it is Ravensworth (or Kirkby Ravensworth in full?) where my family (Coates and Fenwick etc.) come from. It is near Richmond. Hi Jean Both boards and lists are rootswebs and both are and were freely searchable by anyone, the rootsweb search engine just does it more specifically to the enquiry, google will pick up much of what is posted on rootsweb dependent on the search criteria used You have always been able to pick up rootsweb postings via a search engine Some people prefer boards, others lists, the gateways are purely a way for the list members to see the posts on the board (generally of the same name and covering the same area) the choice as to whether a board / list are gatewayed is with the board / list administrator (sometimes one and the same person) You do not need to reply to two places, just one where it is a board post as I explained off list If there is a board post and you wish to reply, click the blue link in the gatewayed post and reply to the board, your reply will in turn be gatewayed back to the list Nothing has changed in recent years My personal opinion as to why the lists have become quieter in recent times is purely the plethora of information which is now available online, less questions need to be asked than there used to be, more people can do their own research than a few short years ago, people are in the main more "savvy" than they were Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Somehow I have missed why decisions were made to link some of the lists I > am on with Gateway and why we have to reply to two sources. Unfortunately we have to use the gateways lists as well because not all the questions are shown on the lists, so you get answers out of the blue which don't make sense. You have to go into the list to read the full enquiry and some of the replies. As a list owner I have been obliged to have gateway lists to help with other people's research. Some people do not use lists at all. Patrick may well have not been able to write and his accent?? How about them having the County wrong. maybe it is Yealand Redmayne or Yealand Conyer which are in Lancashire north of Warton but not far from the border with Yorkshire and maybe the family moved to Yorkshire or maybe Mary Ann just did not know which County she was born in. 1851 Census Ho107-2273 Folio, Yealand Redmayne has a Thomas & Elizabeth BRENNAND both age 39 with 5 children. Unfortunately theer is not a Mary Ann though she may have been with grandparents or similar. Thomas was an Ag Lab and born LAN, Whittington. 1841 Ho107-531-21 folio 6 has Thomas BRENNAN age 29 Ln Weaver Wife Betty age 29 Children: Jane 7, James 4, William 2. Oddly the children seem not to have been born in Lancashire. Maybe this is not the right Thomas BRENNAN but it shows the surname was around the area.
