    1. [YORKSHIRE] 1851 or 1861 census look up please for Hutton Magna or Forcett, North Yorkshire
    2. Carole Robinson
    3. Hello, I have had a break from my family history research as my health hasn't been very good. A cousin who i haven't seen for about 50 years contacted me this week and it gave me the incentive to get my research papers out and shake the dust from them --lol ! Please can some kind person who has time, look up a family on the 1851 or 1861 census for me. The family are WILLIAM SOLKELL (or SALKELL) and his wife JANE +three children --JOSEPH born 1844 bap Feb 25th at a place called Cliff Hind House, Fawcett, North Yorks (on the edge of County Durham) ELIZABETH (my Ancestor) bap 1845 Cliff Hind House, Hutton Magna and PAULE bap 1853 Lowfield, Hutton Magna. I have been researching my family for a few years now and have tried in vane to find the marriage of WILLIAM SOLKELL and JANE (unknown) without success and thought the 1851 census might give some clues. The surname is a bit of a problem as it was spelt SOKELL on the marriage cert of my Grt grandmother ELIZABETH but her bapt gives it as SALKELL ! Elizabeth's father WILLIAM was a Husbandsman of Cliff Hind House, Yorkshire I have also found an earlier childs bap on the IGI that could be of this couple -- WILLIAM SOKEL bap at Adel, (near Leeds) Yorkshire, 19th July 1835 son of WILLIAM and JANE SOKEL. I would be greatfull for any info that can be found. Regards Carole Robinson _________________________________________________________________ New Windows 7: Find the right PC for you. 3. Hi Sue, Thanks for your suggestions. Someone on the list just found the family in Norton Derbs in 1901 for me, which lies in Ecclesall Bierlow district. His parents are John and Kate MERRILL, both born in Sheffield around 1872 and he had an elder brother called Stuart. 3. Hi, Frederick P. MERRILL is 10 years old in the 1911 census of Ecclesall Bierlow district, West Riding, Yorkshire. I cannot find him in the 1901 census, although his birth was registered quarter Dec 1900 in Ecclesall Bierlow district. I'm trying to find the names of his parents who are possibly with him in 1911. Please could anyone help me find them? He marries to my relative Gertrude Alice HARRISON in Gainsborough in 1932. Regards, Andre Bos

    3. Hi Andre, I would suggest you either view the 1911 census record you have found for Frederick or order his birth certificate (or alternatively his marriage certificate would give his father's name). This would then enable you to search for him on the 1901 census knowing you had the correct names for his parents. Best wishes, Sue > > Hi, > > Frederick P. According to this information, his next of kin was sister Ruby Ethel NEALE, nee KNEESHAW. He went to Dunedin High School, so am just guessing he was in New Zealand at some point. He was mentioned in Haig dispatches during the war (1916), so perhaps tracing these records might also assist. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi NJO It does have to be early records . My son was married in Perth Australia in the 1980`s . The Priest was old and retired soon after the marriage . The new Priest suggested to the old Priest as a momento would you like the old Birth-Mariage and Death books as I will be starting new ones . The new Priest did not know the entries had not been sent to the Registrar`s office and when the old priest died all his possessions were destroyed thus we have 12 months of missing registrations . I am sure this is not an isolated case . Laurie Australia researching Pickersgill/Kirkby of Methley/Leeds This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ovington1_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Hi Kim For many reasons not all births were registered particularly in the earlier years of civil registration, the parents forgot or they were in the wrong place and wanted to register it somewhere specific (even though it should be where the birth occurred) etc etc Or they registered the birth and the local registrar did not pass on the detail to the GRO in their quarterly returns or mangled the name in their transcription.

I'm aware that in the early days of registration many did not bother but as virtually all of her siblings were registered, even the older ones, I think it's very strange that she wasn't however thank you very much for the suggestion to contact the registrar where the other birth were registered (didn't think of that one!), hopefully they may be able to help. Also thanks for the suggestion about watermen favouring certain churches - I will certainly give that a go. Do be aware the IGI is far from complete plus some Parish Registers have been subsequently lost, stolen or burnt or whatever, so not all events will be available and certainly not all on the IGI. Check with Parloc for surrounding Parishes (google Parloc its a free download) As they are a traveling family they may have baptised her just about anywhere on route but watermen families did favour certain Churches. Two avenues to try, contact the local registrar for where the other births were registered and ask them to check for the birth (to see if it was missed off the GRO return) Secondly, try a list such as the Thameswatermen who may be better able to advise on likely places favoured by the watermen for Baptism, if they don't know they may know someone who does. Author: kaydoubleu27 Surnames: BROADHEAD Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.yks.general/15409/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi everyone, I've hit a brick wall regarding tracing the birth of my ancestor Selina Broadhead, born in 1844. The various census returns that I have found for her state that she was born in Wakefield, unknown or Goole but as her father and a number of her siblings were born in Sandal Magna, I am assuming the Wakefield entry is correct. However the only Selina Broadhead's birth that I can find in the birth index is in Sheffield. I sent for this certificate but it's the wrong parents. I can find no other entry for a Selina Broadhead on the birth index or the IGI. Through the IGI I have found her fathers birth (Benjamin, baptised January 1815) in Sandal Magna. Her mother is Sarah Crowther (confirmed when I obtained Selina's sibling Ada Louise birth cert) baptised 1810 in Wragby. Selina's older sibings were baptised in Sandal Magna but I can't find the younger one's on IGI. I have searched all the surrounding parishes on the IGI for any Broadhead births in case her first name is incorrect or mis-transcribed but no luck. I have her marriage cert which confirms her father as Benjamin. Apart from literally searching every parish in Yorkshire on the IGI does anyone have any idea as to what I can do next? It makes the search rather more difficult as Benjamin was a 'waterman' and on the 1851 census the family were in York on a 'coal vessel laid on the River Ross/Foss' so she may well have been born anywhere but that doesn't explain why her entry is not on the birth index especially as I have found all of her siblings on the birth index apart from her youngest brother. If anyone can help or can suggest where I can go next I would be extremely grateful. Many thanks Kim Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi, I found my mother's aunt as Dorothy Edith COPER [should actually be COOPER] in the Doncaster census returns of 1911 with her father Edward COPER [born London around 1860]. Would someone be so kind as to check the actual census record for any other family members? Does it mention dat Edward is a widower at all? His wife is not with them in 1901 so I don't know anything about her yet. Regards, Andre Bos, Amsterdam
