    1. [YORKSHIRE] William MacDonald
    2. Gail Arkins
    3. Greetings from Australia, William MacDonald was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire around 1853 or 1855. I know his father was a builder and was named John. I have found William in the 1891 census married to Fanny and also in 1901 and 1911. I know that they were married in London in1886. Does any kind lister have any information of William - his mother, any siblings and where he was before he was married. 1. [YORKSHIRE] Marriage & Imprisonment of George KITCHING ( 1889 )
    2. >From Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper ( London, England ), Sunday, January 20, 1889; Issue 2409. THE CASE OF MARRYING A NIECE. - At Hull, on Wednesday, George Edward KITCHING, commission agent, Grimsby, was committed for trial on the charge of having taken a false oath at Hull, for the purpose of procuring a licence for the solemnisation of his marriage with his niece Clara Maud KITCHING, in November last. When he applied for the licence the defendant is alleged to have said that he and Miss KITCHING were not relations. Miss KITCHING, in the witness-box, admitted having asked the defendant to procure the licence. The Leeds Mercury dated Wednesday, March 6, 1889; Issue 15885 has a full report of the court case. Although too long to copy here in full, the charges & sentence were as follows:-. George Edward KITCHING ( on bail ) was indicted, at the Yorkshire Winter Assizes, North and East Ridings Division, at York Castle on Tuesday, before Mr. Justice DENMAN, for having unlawfully and wilfully sworn, made, and taken a false oath before the Rev. Canon McCORMICK, a Surrogate, thereby procuring and obtaining a marriage license, under which a marriage was subsequently solemnised between himself and Clare Maud KITCHING at Hull, on November 23rd, 1888. Further, under the 7th section of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, with having been criminally intimate with a girl under the age of 18 years, she having been taken out of the care of her parents against their wish and without their consent. The prisoner pleaded "Guilty" to the first indictment, but "Not Guilty" to the second. The sentence of the Court was that the prisoner, for each of the offences, be "Imprisoned and kept to hard labour for 15 calendar months", the terms to run concurrently. Addressing the Governor of the Castle, his Lordship said he thought this was a case where it would be better not to allow the girl to have access to the prisoner.

Have recently been looking into my great great grandfathers brother Benjamin Belt born in Hull in 1861. I found him on the 1891 census as a prisoner in yorkshire and then in the 1901 census as a pauper in the Hull Lunatic Asylum. My question is where to go next to put bones on his story. I have tried to find a death record but to no avail and he doesnt appear on the 1911 census. Where do i go to find out what happened to him and why he was in the asylum? Would there be newspaper reports on his trial somewhere? I am new to family history research so any advice would be greatly appreciated. 3. Have you tried contacting the National Health Service to see if they hold records for the Hull Lunatic Asylum in the early 1900's? I had an ancestor who was in the Riccartsbar Lunatic Asylum in Paisley, Scotland from 1870's thru 1922 and when I contacts the NHS in Glasgow they located records and sent me a great deal of information. It would be worth a try to contact the NHS and see if they can help you. 3. Hi Ian, There is another Topcliffe in Yorkshire which I have successfully missed off the "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages on the Genuki site (must fix this!). You can find the other Topcliffe near Morley - go to www.streetmap.co.uk and put in Topcliffe as the search. 1. Re: [YORKSHIRE] Where is Toplift, YKS?
    2. Ian In order to maintain continuity on this subject I have collated the emails that we have exchanged on this subject. To Ian - reply sent 05/11/09 Unfortunately I currently do not have access to the 1911 Census, but I believe that your TOPLIFT should read TOPCLIFFE, which is adjacent to the other areas mentioned on previous Census returns. To assist in understanding the area names mentioned on the various Census returns I have created a map (unfortunately modern day) but it shows the relationship of East Ardsley; West Ardsley; Tingley & Topcliffe. As all the Census returns are not local to the above areas the enumerators would not have known the area, therefore would have had to rely on either verbal, or written notes on the family. I see that Lily's father originated from Devon and I think that his broad devonian acsent could have easily been misunderstood by a Durham enumerator. The attached was created by extracting section of the Ordnance Survey from the following web-site. http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm >From Ian 05/11/09 Hi Raymond The person I am seeking is Lily Palmer. She was the 5th of 11 children and the only one born in Yorkshire - all the rest were born at Castle Eden, Durham. Why Lily was not also born there is a mystery so far - perhaps her mother had a relative there or was there for some other reason at the time of birth. I did find a mention of Toplift on another person's tree after doing a Google search but there was no additional information available. A reply to a posting I put on the Yorkshire List suggested that there was a Toplift at Outwood which is sort of in the right area. Another possibility might be Topcliffe but it seems to be too far north to be a contender. The difficulty is that the place of birth for the person I am trying to trace is different on all 4 census records - Ingley (which I cannot find) in 1881, West Ardsley in 1891 (I cannot find it either but assume it is not too far from East Ardsley which appears on my atlas), Tonslift or Tunslift or similar in 1901 (hard to decipher) and Toplift in 1911. Lily and her family were living at Seaham Harbour, Durham in 1911 and her husband was a coal miner. I am fairly sure that she was the Lily Palmer who was born at Wakefield in 1878 which fits with West Ardsley and perhaps Toplift if it is near Outwood. The spelling of many places in the census records is often not accurate which makes things difficult. 3. Thankyou Judy for the attachment of the census form, its good to see it as it was on the day ! This is indeed my family. I have been looking at the locations on the map, they didn't move very far. I didn't know that there were other children so some more searching for baptisms to be done. Another lister gave me what looks like the marriage of William Sokell and Jane so i will have to follow that up also. This has given me an appetite for more research ! 1. [YORKSHIRE] Where is Toplift, YKS?
    2. Ian and Sharon Loiterton
    3. On the 1911 Census I have found a place of birth for an ancestor as Toplift in Yorkshire. This name does not appear in my road atlas. If anyone can help with finding where it is I would be very appreciative. My suspicion/hope is that it might be somewhere in the vicinity of Leeds - perhaps in the Wakefield or West Ardsley area. I did find Topcliffe on my map but this is further north and most likely beyond the area where my ancestor lived. Any help appreciated. Ian Ian Loiterton Canberra, A.C.T., AUSTRALIA
