    3. Of course, you WILL share your recipe, won't you? Learning how to make something that was an important part of family life for our ancestors would definitely enhance our Yorkshire Family Stories, I should think. I don't think that our families went out to bakeries way back then, so surely there are family-held recipes for this goody that we have only heard about... often wondered what a "Parkin" was! Nancy in Michigan, U S of A, where there just aren't many Parkins... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janice Wood" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 13, 2009 1:05 PM Subject: [YORKSHIRE] London Group meeting > Hello all, > > As Roy has mentioned it - I am going to the meeting on the 28th, to hear a > talk about "Yorkshire Food" by Christine Willott - if you've been to any > of > our Yorksgen gatherings, you probably know Chris. > My contribution to the meeting - I am bringing some authentic Yorkshire > Parkin, which all those who attend will be able to sample. > > Now many of you will be wondering what Parkin is - it's made at our local > bakery and is an oaty gingerbread. > > :-)) > > Janice Wood > > > > > Some useful websites - > FREECEN - http://www.freecen.org.uk/ > FREEBMD - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ > Want to know where a place in Yorkshire is - Try Genuki > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    1. [YORKSHIRE] Leeds Tithe Map project
    2. Hi folks The Leeds Tithe Map project has been created under the control of the West Yorkshire Joint Archive Services. Unfortunately at the moment this project only covers the current Leeds Metropolitan area as at 1974. There is a wish to extend to other West Yorkshire areas but that depends on funding. Tithe maps to coincide geographically with the Leeds Metropolitan area were reviewed & professionally restored before being sent to the Coal Authority offices in Nottingham to be photographed digitally. The Coal Authority in Nottingham has the biggest camera facility in the UK. The digitalised Tithe maps were then linked to current day mapping i.e. Multimap, so you can look for an address on the right hand side of the screen and compare it with the corresponding Tithe mapping on the left hand side. The Apportionment books relating to the Tithe maps have been again digitalised and can be viewed in association with the Tithe Maps. So you can see who OWNED the Tithed land in addition to who WORKED that land. I attended a workshop for the pilot project at our local library a few weeks back. The official launch of the site is today. The link to the site is http://www.tracksintime.wyjs.org.uk/. The Tithe Map comparison is provided on the top left link button. Should you come across any problems with this site please be patient and report the problem through the 'contact us' link. I did suggest to them to provide a 'report (X) error' type reporting facility on the site. 1. [YORKSHIRE] Help -- looking for parish records for the village of Scargill, about 1810
    2. Carole Robinson
    3. Hello, i hope you don't mind but i am asking for help again ! >From census info that i was kindly given last week i found my 2nd grt grandmother Jane (possibly Ponder) who was born abt 1810 at Scargill, Yorkshire. I am confused as to where to look for the baptism records for this place. I have looked on the present day map and it lies just south of Barnard Castle, but this is in County Durham ? I have also been trying to find any records for the surname of Ponder on the IGI around the area of Scargill, Fawcett and Hutton Magna but its not a very common Spelling/Name ! I have found most of them are from the south of the country. I thought i might find some more info on Jane's family if i could find them on the census. There is a marriage in Teesdale 1839 which fits with a Jane Ponder and William SALKELD/ Sokell. I have the census info for William and Jane Salkeld and family including my grt grandmother Elizabeth for 1841,1851 and 1861 - --Elizabeth was born 1845 and baptised at Eppleby, North Yorkshire as was her brothers Joseph and Paul. The family moved about alot sometimes living in Yorkshire and other times across the border in Durham. Its proving difficult becouse the parishes they lived in were on the border between Yorkshire and Durham and also because of boundry changes so i don't know where to start to look for parish info. Any help would be apreciated Many thanks Carole Robinson _________________________________________________________________ Have more than one Hotmail account? 1. [YORKSHIRE] Death of Matthew STEEL of Kimberworth ( 1794 )
    2. >From Sun ( London, England ), Thursday, December 18, 1794; Issue 694. COUNTRY NEWS. Leeds, Dec.15. Thursday the 20th ult. died at Kimberworth, near Rotherham, Mr. Matthew STEEL, a respectable farmer and publican. At the time the writer of this paid a visit to him, about nine years ago, he weighed thirty-five stone. The manner of his feeding was as extraordinary as his bulk. In his youth he received a stab in his side, after the recovery of which he began to feed, and continued to do so till he attained the weight above-mentioned. He was a man of an amiable disposition, and a cheerful companion; and was in the 67th year of his age. A neighbouring Gentleman having a law-suit a few years ago, requested permission to examine Mr. STEEL's writings, which proved that the family had been inhabitants of the above village upwards of 800 years.

    1. [YORKSHIRE] FRANK's of WHITBY
    2. Patricia Barsby
    3. I am researching for my husband, a newly found line, his Gt.Gt. Grandfather William Pattison FRANK born 1842 in London and was previously thought to be of the surname Barsby now found to have been born illigimate. His parents were MARTHA BURGESS born Whitechapel, London c1824 and PATTISON FRANK a Mariner from Whitby born c1815. Pattison went on to marry ELIZABETH MILLS in 1846. Martha Burgess married another Mariner in London, name of John Henry Barsby and her child William was raised under that name. Would anyone on the list be researching any of the above? Any exchange of background information on the Frank family would be greatly appreciated. I have obviously followed up on census and what info was available to me through IGI and ancestry.com but would like to expand on marriages for William's half sisters etc. Namely MARY ELIZABETH FRANK born 1851 Whitby and SARAH JANE FRANK born 1853 Whitby. Also any marriage or death for a SARAH FRANK born 1817 Whitby. I do also have a Fiche reader so any help or advise on parish records available for purchase would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you all so very much for taking the time to read my posting. I think you have hit pay-dirt. My own line descends from the same tree and involves a confirmed family legend involving large estates throughout Yorkshire. The line you are working up from is a line that has eluded me for decades. I am aware that the line had links to Chicago but had never really considered they had moved out of the area, let alone England. I am mortified that your posting is over 8 years old but my personal email is [email protected] and I would be delighted to hear from you. All the places listed (Kirk Ella, Keyingham, Anlaby and Aldbrough) are all nearby each other so they are likely connections. You'd have to look for the deaths to see what happened to William. I can't find a relevant Alice on the 1901 census without having a more detailed read through. Sorry, Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
