An interesting item sent to the Shropshire list today: According the UK Financial Times there may be another Census in the UK in 2006. Quote : "A new population survey could be held in an attempt to rectify the shortcomings of the 2001 census, the government's statistics watchdog has said. Professor David Rhind, the new chairman of the Statistics Commission, said he was considering calling for a new population survey in 2006 to meet the objections of local authorities, which have complained of huge mistakes in the results. The census two years ago - which cost more than £250m and suffered a range of operational problems - is hailed by the Office for National Statistics as "the most accurate count of the UK population ever". ==== ENG-LIVERPOOL Mailing List ==== Admin Message (updated May 2003) http://freespace.virgin.net/genealogical.collections/AdminMessage.htm
How on earth could it be claimed that the 2001 census was the most accurate yet - lots of forms not delivered. It was up to the household to send the form back etc. It used to be simpler when an enumerator called around and asked a few simple questions. I wonder what the percentage return really was for 2001, compared to the 19th century censuses. There have frequently been censuses at the half way point, but these have usually only been on a sample of the population and the detailed results, in terms of names and addresses, would probably not be published in the way the main censuses are Jack Earnshaw -----Original Message----- From: Jan Perkins [mailto:janperkins@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 14 July 2003 13:43 To: ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ BRAD] UK Census in 2006 ??? I know from a Westminster newsletter I get sent to me here that Westminster Council are challenging the 2001 census, having 'lost ' an impossibly large number of residents compared to 1991. They were threatening to sue I believe, so a mid-term census might be an answer. What a boon for researchers in future should it happen!
