Just seen this on the Listowners List, perhaps this is part of the proble= ms some of us have been experiencing. Hello All, I thought this message passed on to me by my spouse would be of interest to you, it was sent to the Manchester rootsweb :- I am a volunteer at a local LDS centre (not a church member). I know extractions are still being carried out at my centre. Also, to keep up with what is happening regarding LDS info, the news page on the family search site is useful, I copied this from it just now Updated International Genealogical Index A new version of the International Genealogical Index is now available on the FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service (FamilySearch Internet). This new version contains the following enhancements: * More Names. More names have been added to the index. These names wer= e received since the last release in January 2000. * Regular updates. The index will be updated as new information is received. Note: There are no current plans to update the International Genealogical Index on compact disc. * Individuals linked into families. Some individuals are linked into families and can be displayed on family groups and pedigree charts. The number of linked individuals is relatively small but is expected to grow significantly in the future. You can also download family group records and pedigree charts. * Additional event information. All events that were in original user submissions are now displayed and can be used as search criteria. * Improved searching. You can now search the index by given name, surname and state, and more types of events, even across regions. The processes used to find individuals in spite of spelling and other differences in the nam= e have also been improved. * Information to describe the source. When you display an individual=B9= s records, you will see messages that describe the source of the information. Hope this is of some help to some people Cheers, Lesley in Oz -------------------------------------------------------------------------= - Jan in Bronte Country Warmest Wishes Jan in Bronte Country List admin ENG-YKS-Bradford. These names wer e > received since the last release in January 2000.> I BELIEVE it's worth pointing out rather firmly that, as I understand it, the additional names that have been added to the IGI are largely comprised of submitted information from LDS members and others. I don't know what other listers have found, but I've discovered that some names and events I KNOW were formerly there have disappeared! I've been told the LDS's ultimate intention is gradually to transfer the "proper" records - i.e. the officially extracted ones from parish registers and BTs etc - to CD, as on the Second Edition of the British Isles Vital Records Index, which contains over twice as many entries now as the first edition. Eventually, I gather, the IGI will consist largely of private patron submissions, which means of course that its value as a research tool is going to diminish fairly swiftly if this happens, since as a matter of course I never give any credence to any event submitted by another party without the original source being cited. No disrespect intended to LDS members, most of whom I am sure do their best to get it right, but the plain fact is there are some dreadful howlers in the IGI, as in those utterly worthless "birth about..." entries, which are arrived at by the simple guesswork process of deducting 25 years from a marriage date in the case of a male and 21 years in the case of a female. It really is time these were removed altogether from the IGI. Newcomers to genealogy may perhaps wonder how you tell which entries are official, extracted ones and which are member patron submissions? Easy - just look at the batch numbers. All batch numbers beginning with C, J or K indicate baptisms from a parish register or bishop's transcripts; M or E = marriages from a PR or BTs; P could contain either event from a printed register or typed transcript. All other batch numbers - those starting with an A or F or all-numerical ones - are private submissions that should be treated with the greatest caution. And, of course, any entry with the dreaded appendage "Relative" should be ignored totally!
