    3. Hi Valerie Although it is a simple game, there was an enormous interest in it because of the amount of money riding on the players. I can never remember which the Knurr and Spell is, so I have called them the bat and the ball. The aim of the game was to hit a small wooden or pot ball as far as possible. The 'bat' was about four foot in length with a fairly whippy shaft, and a piece of wood about 3 inch by 1 inch at the end for striking the ball. When the player was ready the ball was 'fired' into the air, before being struck. There were two methods of getting the ball into air, (1) the ball rested in a cup on the end of a seesaw, and the player hit the the other end with his bat to fire the ball into air. (2) the cup was at the end of a spring, that was held down by a catch, and the the player sprung the catch with his bat and the ball was fired into the air. I tried my hand at it, many years ago, and never the hit the ball, but my friend's grandfather hit it every time. If I remember correctly, there are examples of the equipment in Shibden Hall museum at Halifax, which is also well worth a visit to see how our ancestors lived in the 16th/17th century. So many people there too.! This is fascinating stuff and in the right area. Of course with SUTCLIFFE so common it could be any William, or one related or even John's father. They could have been there anyway. > So who can tell me about 'knurr and spell' and the scoring for it ?
