When I first read that, I thought it meant evening dress ie: formal evening gown! ;-) Roy, are you sure your Grandad didn't live in Keighley? {vbg} again! My GreatGrandUncle, Ellis Riley from Keighley, gave piano recitals at the Alhambra in Bradford. When was your Grandfather there? When they had an afternoon matinee, he would leave his home in Pudsey and go off to Bradford on the bus at lunchtime in full evening dress. Most people knew him, of course, but he still used to get some funny looks from strangers.

Of course, he worked for Francis Laidler, the great Bradford theatrical impressario who built the Alhambra and opened it in 1914. I have a super book on it called "Domes of Delight" by the former theatre critic of the Bradford Telegraph & Argus Peter Holdsworth, published in 1989. The Alhambra these days is a civic theatre (belonging to the council) and very resplendent.
