Valerie Have you contacted the British Music Hall Society? They have a lot of research material on old variety artists, I believe. A good few years ago, when I was trying to identify some of the more obscure artists in my grandfather's photograph album of all the music hall acts he played for during his career as a musician, I met an old boy from the Music Hall Society and he had an encyclopedic knowledge of the stage.
