    3. Don't bother. It's a rip off. If you don't have a reasonably accurate idea of when the birth was REGISTERED, then you may spend a lot of money searching as the site doesn't give returns on specific names but parts of the register. If you search eg knowles born (registered) 1st quarter of 1840 to last quarter 1841, then you are presented with almost 500 pages which need looking at. You then have to guess which pages might contain the name you are looking for, but as they are presented in quarters, you will have to look at each quarter. If you buy ?5 unit (55 hits), you may well use this up before you find the name. When you DO find the name, all you will get is the GRO reference, so you will NOT find a birth (or death or marriage) date via this route, but will need to order the certificate. Now I know that is the normal course of doing things, but this is very time consuming and expensive. Personally, I'll stick to Free BMD for anything prior to 1902 and only use this for later events which my relatives cannot help with.
