For anyone who doesn't know, when you order BMD certificates from local register offices, you can specify contents, eg, "if the father's name is John." If the certificate doesn't match your criteria, the register office will return your fee. As well, if they're not terribly busy, some office staff will look for an entry that does match and ask you if you want that one. If you order certificates from the GRO, they'll return part of your fee if your criteria doesn't match. I just received my money order back like this last week from the Salford RO.
